WOMEN BOOST PROMOTION HOPES

Borough’s eighth consecutive League win at home to second placed Sawbridgeworth Town lifted them above their visitors and into third place – only one point behind new runners up Hutton but with four games in hand on them.   Borough are seven points behind leaders Colchester Town who they yet have to play twice but have two games in hand on them.   Sarah Cleary scored twice in Borough’s convincing 3-1 win with birthday girl Eleftheria Taladianoy also on target.

DUNSTABLE TOWN DELIVER REALITY CHECK

Mathematically, Borough’s quest for the League Championship is far from over but visiting Dunstable Town took full advantage of defensive frailties to run up a three goal lead and complete the double for the season before Richard Worrell drove home a stoppage time consolation which at least maintained Borough’s record of scoring in all 22 League games this season and was no less than was deserved for keeping going to the bitter end having twice hit a post in the space of five minutes late in the first half.   It is telling that although Borough have lost only 5 League games all have effectively been “6 pointers” against other teams in the top 5.   Borough remain fourth but even winning all the games in hand on the teams above them would not lift them any higher and they are 14 points behind leaders Royston Town with only one game in hand.

ANOTHER FOUR GOAL HAUL

The first game of the New Year was remarkably similar to the last of the old as a late flurry of goals again saw Borough finsh with four against a team struggling at the foot of the table. But this time they were forced to come from behind by visiting Hanwell Town who struck first in the ninth minute. It was a day on which there was no change to the statuis quo at the top of the Division as all 6 teams won and Borough was the only team to even concede a goal.

2011 IN RETROSPECT

For the MEN’s team it has most certainly been our best ever year whilst in the Spartan South Midlands League

62 Competitive games were played (32 this season 29 last)

33 were won (21 this season 12 Last); 10 drawn (4 this season 6 last); 19 lost (8 this season 11 last)

We scored 131 goals 80 this season) and conceded 93 (49 this season)

We kept 15 clean sheets (9 this season, 6 last)

We failed to score on 9 occasions (2 this season – both Cup games – 7 last)

We have scored a goal or more in every one of this seasons 21 League games

6 goals is our highest individual score – at Berkhamsted in this seasons League Challenge Trophy

5 goals is the most we have conceded – at Hanwell Town last season

***********************************

For the WOMEN the first half of the year is best forgotten as we struggled to compete in the Premier Division with a team lacking the necessary experience and were relegated but after a dismal start to this season the side has gone from strength to strength and eight consecutive League games have been won making promotion a realistic target.

26 Competitive games were played (15 this season, 11 last)

11 were won (10 this season 1 last);   1 was drawn (this season); 14 were lost (4this season 10 last)

We scored 43 goals (39 this season 4 last) and conceded 55 (20 this season 35 last)

We kept 5 clean sheets – all this season

We failed to score on11 occasions (2 this season 9 last)

6 goals is our highest individual score – at East Thurrock United in the League this season

6 goals is the most we  conceded – to Arlesey Town at home in the League last season

FOUR GOAL ROMP ENABLES BOROUGH TO FINISH THE YEAR IN 4TH PLACE

The 4-0 scoreline against visiting Hatfield Town suggests an easy win but until the last third of the game, when Borough finally cut loose having broken the deadlock through Dewayne Clarke in the 65th minute, a goal-less draw looked to be quite a possibility. But Borough then assumed complete control and added further strikes by Richard Worrell, Roland Namquita and Stephen Obeng to secure the three points which keeps them very much in the promotion hunt should favourites Royston Town suffer an unexpected blip. “The Crows” moved back to the summit with a 4-0 win at Berkhamsted but erstwhile leaders Dunstable Town slipped up at home to Colney Heath losing by the odd goal in three.   Fourth placed Leverstock Green also lost – by 3-2 at Aylesbury United enabling Borough to overtake them but third placed AFC Dunstable cemented their position as dark horses with a 2-0 win at Biggleswade United.

BOROUGH COMPREHENSIVELY BEATEN

Having run their high-flying visitors Royston Town so close in the FA Vase tie seventeen days ago expectations of another tight game were realistic for this League encounter. But after Borough took the lead midway through the first half "The Crows" moved into top gear and dominated proceedings thereafter. Although Borough absorbed the pressure until the interval they were run ragged in the second half by a team superior in all aspects of the game and the visitors notched four goals to leave as convincing and deserving winners.

Borough now lie 5th in the table having lost only 4 League games but unfortunately the defeats have been one to each of the Clubs above them.

LEADERS FALTER BUT BOROUGH FAIL TO TAKE FULL ADVANTAGE

BOROUGH’S seven match League game winning streak was finally ended by a lively Harefield United side with Borough forced to come from behind twice and equalise in stoppage time with a Darrell Cox header which made it 2-2.   It was a disappointing day to drop two points as leaders Royston Town were beaten 2-1 at Stotfold and were deposed by Dunstable Town who won 2-1 at Hillingdon Borough.   The dropped points push Borough down to 5th but they have one or more games in hand on all four teams above them and only Dunstable Town and Royston Town have dropped less points than Borough
