FIRST "NO-SCORE" DRAW SINCE JANUARY 2011 - BUT DEFINITELY NOT A BORE DRAW

Matches between Borough and Colney Heath are never occasions when the faint-hearted would feel comfortable and this game completely fulfilled such expectations.  Both teams played most of the match with only 10 players and there could be little argument about the justice of the dismissals.   Some other players trod a dangerous line and could well have suffered similar fates.     Borough may feel disappointed at dropping two points from what may well have been their best performance of the season.   But much credit must go to the visiting ' keeper Jamie Jackson for what was surely a man of the match performance.   Borough have certainly played worse and won and will doubtless do so again.

TROPHY DEFENCE STARTS CONVINCINGLY

Borough never looked in danger of an early exit as they began their defence of the League Challenge Trophy they won last season with a 5-1 win at Welwyn Garden City on Wednesday 26th.  The Citizens threatened to make a game of it in the first half and equalized Chris Benjamin's 12th minute opener with a fine goal but by half time Benjamin had completed his hat-trick.    Borough's lead was never seriously threatened in the second half when only some fine home goalkeeping and goal-line clearances kept the score down with Benjamin netting his 4th and Roland Namquita completing the scoring. In the 2nd Round brough will visit New Bradwell St. Peter, another 1st Division team and currently at the foot of the table who, perhaps rather surprisingly, won 2-0 away to Premier Division opponents (Hatfield Town) in the 1st. round

NO GAME FOR THE MEN  - WOMEN  WIN AGAIN

Borough Women returned victorious from their visit to Stevenage Borough with a hard fought 2-1 win secured by early and late goals.     This was their second successive 2-1 win after a disastrous three weeks that saw them ship 18 goals although scoring 9 themselves; but their more patient and measured “build from the back” approach has immediately brought a six point dividend to lift them into the top half of the table.

GOALS GALORE BUT MORE MIDWEEK WOE

If goals are your fancy then Borough are the team to watch for their last three games have seen 19 hit the net.  Unfortunately, although Borough have scored more of them (10 - 9 ) they have twice been the losers.    The game at St. Margaretsbury was an end to end affair with plenty of chances , shots on target and fine saves but it was "The Saints" whose defence was the more solid who ran out 5-2 winners and so ended the previous  8 match run  of games between the Clubs which had seen Borough win 7 and draw the other.  Borough now lie 9th in the table with a 50% record (4-1-4)  earning 13 points from their 9 games, 10 points behind unbeaten leaders Dunstable Town who have also played 9 games.

AFTER THE LORD MAYORS SHOW............

......it was back home and down to earth with a bump as fellow Spartan South Midlands League team HADLEY deservedly left Coles Park 4-0 winners and will now play Berkhamsted - also of our League - in the 1st Round Proper of the FA Carlsberg Vase.     Hardly a result to be expected following an 8-0 win against a team higher in the table than Hadley, but  then consistency and predictability have never featured prominently in Borough's history.

8 - 0 WIN ENDS MID-WEEK HOODOO

Given that Borough's last three midweek matches have resulted in 3 defeats following indifferent performances no-one would have dreamed of forecasting an 8 - 0 win away to the team lying second in the table.    But it was no fluke although after 40 minutes of even end to end football such a result never seemed remotely on the cards.  But two quick goals in the dying minutes of the first half were followed by a devastating display of speed and finishing after the interval.  Borough even wasted a penalty and finished with only ten men.   Despite the win Borough still remain behind their victims in the table in 6th place  with 13 points from 8 games, 6 behind leaders Dunstable Town who have played a game less.

WHEN SATURDAY COMES........

.....all is well.   For the second consecutive Saturday Borough turned a half time deficit into a 3-1 win.    This time at Hillingdon Borough's Middlesex Stadium in a League match.  The 3 points lifted Borough to 9th in the table with 10 points from 7 games.

YET ANOTHER THREE POINTS THROWN AWAY THROUGH SLOPPY FINISHING

In a game of few clear cut chances, Borough contrived to miss two golden opportunities in the closing minutes and then stoppage time which would have reversed the destination of the three points which Hanwell Town's sole successful strike of the match in the 52nd minute secured for them.
