Game NotesBorough just lost out in a close fought match at the Burroughs Park home of the League leaders in a match where all three goals were the result of set pieces. With a “Rory Delap” type throw-in merchant in the home line-up Borough were constantly forced into aerial battle as a succession of corners, free kicks and throws were launched at them but, not without some difficulty and near misses, they weathered the early onslaught. It was in open play that Borough looked dangerous and Lee Allen sent their first half chance narrowly over the bar. Anthony McDonald slipped when he seemed well placed to score from close range at the far post when a low cross was fired over from the left and Charles Douse went close with a header following a corner. The home side produced little to trouble Borough ‘keeper Erbil Bozkurt other than at set pieces and it was from a free kick driven in from the left that he was finally beaten in the 39th minute when Billy Radley glanced an accurate header low into the corner to his left. Play continued in the same pattern and nine minutes into the second half Wakering doubled their lead when a corner was headed clear but fell conveniently for Joe Skeels to lash a high swerving shot just inside Bozkurt’s left hand post from a central position on the edge of the penalty area. Borough continued to press without producing any finishing efforts to test home keeper Adam Seal but looked more threatening late on when the fresh legs and strength of Stephen Obeng and Patou Katshenge were introduced; but their only success came from the penalty spot eight minutes from time as Dean Fenton drove a low ball confidently past Seal after Chris Benjamin’s heels had been clipped as he ran in from the left. This set up a nervy few minutes for the home side who unsurprisingly opted for the “keep the ball at the corner flag” routine when several opportunities to do so arose. Borough’s final effort deep into stoppage time was a “go for glory” attempt from late substitute Darrell Cox, making a welcome return after a long injury lay off, but his 35 yard effort flew well wide.
