Game NotesHaving lost the early season League match on their visit to Mile End Stadium Borough could not really have expected to make such comfortable progress in the FA Carlsberg Vase. But they seized the initiative right from the off and had wasted two good chances before the unmarked Anthony McDonald blasted home after 8 minutes after fine work by Dewayne Clarke down the right enabled him to pull back an inviting ball for his onrushing colleague. Borough continued to enjoy the lion’s share of possession in the first half and the defence was in good form too and denied their hosts any really clear cut chances. Borough’s finishing was not as sharp as their always threatening approach work and when they did force the ball home from a corner it was disallowed for a foul on the ‘keeper. But after 38 minutes they finally doubled the lead when Dean Fenton beat an offside trap and rounded the keeper to flick the ball into the net from a tight angle. Solomon Shields should have wrapped up the win before half time but, after doing all the hard work with some excellent close control to set himself up in a very crowded penalty area, somehow managed to fire wide of the ’keepers right hand post from a free position in the centre of the six yard line. At the start of the second half it looked as if that miss might be one Borough would regret as Hamlets emerged in a more determined frame of mind and enjoyed a fifteen minute spell of pressure and dominance. A comeback seemed on the cards when a corner from the right was met with a powerful free header from inside the six yard box which all present assumed was destined for the top left corner of Ashley Harris’s goal but the airborne save he produced to push it wide brought admiration, and near disbelief, from “friend and foe” alike. A few minutes later he again excelled as he got down to held on to a low 20 yard free kick fired powerfully through the wall. After that he confidently dealt routinely with everything which came his way and Borough responded by raising their own game again although not to the standard produced in the first half and without creating any gilt edged opportunities . A few minutes from the end of normal time a double yellow by their central defender for dissent reduced Hamlets to 10 men but it mattered little as the match was effectively decided by then; but in stoppage time McDonald had the last word as he latched on to a through ball and drew the ‘keeper out to the right of his goal before curling it past him low into the far corner, again from a very tight angle.
