Game NotesBorough made a smooth start to their match against higher level opponents and those not in the know might well have thought it was Borough in the higher echelon after the first half hours play. It took 8 minutes for Borough to secure the lead when Anthony McDonald timed his run perfectly to avoid being caught offside and having burst clear centrally finished with a clinical low shot from just inside the penalty area into the corner to the ‘keepers right. Borough looked comfortable in all departments with Joseph O’Cearuill and Daniel Gudgeon forming a formidable barrier at the heart of the defence flanked by Daniel Walker and Cedric Lakole. In the 25th minute McDonald doubled the lead when Dean Fenton sent over a cross from the right which seemed easy enough for the visiting defence to deal with but hesitation between the keeper and one of his defenders was all the invitation McDonald needed to nip in and flick it home. Unsurprisingly, this spurred Hayes into more determined action and Erbil Bozkurt in the Borough goal produced the save of the match when he took off to clutch and hold a rocket shot from some 20 yards out. Borough’s composure was ruffled in the 40th minute when Dewayne Clarke, whose tricky footwork and clever shielding of the ball had given the opposition plenty of problems, sustained a serious eye injury which necessitated a hospital visit. Lawrence Constanti came on to replace him. And a few moments before the interval Steve Loveridge put Hayes back in the game as he hooked home from some 10 yards giving Bozkurt no chance. Doubtless the visiting Manager’s half time talk was none too complimentary to his team and Borough certainly faced a much more determined outfit in the second half. Worse befell Borough when O’Cearuill was unable to resume after the interval with hamstring trouble. Fortunately the versatile Lewis Laws was around to be moved back into the heart of the defence and Solomon Shields came on to take over his midfield role. Borough were never able to test visiting keeper Ben Boulter in the second half but the front runners did useful work in relieving the pressure on the now overworked defence even though they created few chances of their own. It was fortunate that Hayes finishing was not as potent as their approach play and several fine half chances were squandered as Borough back four defended stoutly often re-inforced by Nick Nicou, himself often selected as a central defender. In the last ten minutes and what seemed like an eternity of stoppage time Borough had to repel a succession of corners and free kicks driven into the danger area and coped admirably with Gudgeon heading powerfully clear on several occasions. Sensibly Borough did run down the clock whenever the opportunity presented itself with McDonald, Fenton, Constanti (who took a bit too long over one throw in and was booked) and Darrell Cox being prominent in that department taking the ball towards the corner flags whenever opportunity presented itself. The final whistle was a blessed relief and will send Borough to Wembley on 14th September in the First Qualifying Round. Unfortunately not to the famous stadium but to the Vale Farm home of the Combined Counties League side of that name who had a fine away win at Ryman Club Ware in the Preliminary Round.
