Game Notes | Haringey Borough lost 4-1 against a strong Leyton side to go out of the FA Youth Cup at the preliminary stage. However the club will be buoyed by the performance which showed the potential that this young group of players have. It must be remembered that 13 out of the 14 players used are still eligible to play under17 football. Bearing this in mind the worth ethic, organisation and chances created were quite an achievement and although ultimately undone, Boro were more then a match for their opposition who are 3 steps above them in the pyramid.
The first half started evenly, however Leyton had generally more possession, where as Haringey broke quickly on the counter and created better chances. The referee gifted Leyton the lead when captain Gustavo Angel was adjudged to have handled the ball in the penalty area, however it was walloped at him from around a yard away and there was no way he could possibly avoid it.
This only spurred Haringey on as they looked for an equalizer, and after missing numerous chances finally scored from the edge of the penalty area through a lovely strike from Sylvestre Espana on 44 minutes.
This hard work was however undone 2 minutes later when the speedy Leyton forward burst past 2 defenders and slotted past Gaglani in the Boro goal.
At half-time Haringey had played the better football and looked the more organised, in truth they should have been more clinical in front of goal and taken a lead into the second half.
The second half was similar to the first, however around the 60 minute mark a moment of indecisive defending allowed Leyton a sloppy 3rd and vital goal. This was a real kick in the teeth and virtually ended the tie. To add insult to injury Leyton scored from a free header to wrap the tie up and progress to a 1st Qualifying Round Tie with Redbridge.
Boris Bonket saw Red late on for a foul where he was deemed the last man. Again it seems the ref got the big decision wrong, where Chinua Phinn-Archer was clearly the covering defender.
All in all a disappointing result, but a very good performance which gives lots of positives for the future. Next season any opposition will find knocking this Boro side out of the FA Youth Cup a much tougher proposition.
