Game NotesEven though this was the culmination of a 5 games in 8 days slog Borough’s “still standing” squad of just twelve swept aside the League table–proppers easily enough but some sense of perspective should be borne in mind as Holmer Green have shipped 147 goals in 39 League games. Results elsewhere in the Division mean that they and Hatfield Town, who lost by an even greater score (10-1 at Oxhey Jets) will occupy the relegation spots. It took 23 minutes for Borough to open the scoring when Darrell Cox followed up to net a team-mates blocked effort. Minutes later he added a second when his shot took a wicked deflection and looped upwards before dropping into the top corner. That when you are bottom of the League luck rarely shines on you was cruelly demonstrated a few minutes later when an identical deflected effort of Holmer Green’s hit the angle of bar and post, flew across goal and stayed out. Five minutes into the second half the match was effectively settled when Cox completed his hat-trick and any lingering Green hopes were extinguished when their central defender Michael Green was red-carded for deliberate handball, perhaps rather surprisingly for he had gone to ground a few yards out in the course of a desperate goal-mouth scramble. Cedric Lakole unfussily drove the spot kick low to ‘keeper Dan Little’s right. Anthony McDonald scored a fine goal as he cut in from the left, shaped to roll the ball into the centre, but instead surprised the keeper by blasting it home at the near post. Holmer Green’s problems are at the back for they have scored more than four of the teams above them so it was no surprise that they pulled two quick goals back to make it 5-2 but McDonald restored the 5 goal margin with an accurate low shot into the corner from just outside the penalty area. But the match will mainly be remembered for the closing goal in the final minutes as Borough ‘keeper Erbil Bozkurt launched a massive kick from hands at the edge of his own penalty area the bounce of which deep into the Holmer half deceived Little as he advanced to collect it just inside his area, perhaps understandably as it was somewhat unexpected that it could still bounce so high on the now saturated boggy pitch; three Borough strikers raced in for the kill but refrained from giving it an assisting poke as it trundled on through the mud with just enough momentum to take it over the line without help thus enabling Erbil to join the relatively small band of ‘keepers who have scored direct.
