Game NotesBorough returned empty handed from Preston Park after 90 minutes of fast end to end football from two attack minded teams. Borough had the best of the early chances when Darrell Cox headed down a free kick from Dean Fenton which seemed sure to nestle just inside the far post until home ‘keeper Charlie Miller made a fine diving save to tip it round for a corner. Chris Benjamin had a number of early half chances but could not get enough power in his finishes to trouble Miller. New signing Joe O’Cearuill was prominent in the centre of midfield combining well with Paul Yiannakas, the other central midfielder. As the half wore on Harefield’s very fast running forwards began to threaten regularly and sustained pressure resulted in them taking the lead after some 36 minutes when Joe Shepherd’s fine 10 yard shot was arrowed into the corner low to Borough ‘keeper Erbil Bozkurt’s right giving him no chance. Nor did he have any hope two minutes later when Jake Girt finished from a central position following a cross from the left when the Borough defence was slow to react to a clearance. Borough opened the second half confidently without being able to find a finish to trouble Miller at the end of attractive and promising approach play but it was “The Hares” who came closest to a further score when a precise looping header beat Bozkurt but smacked the bar and bounced to safety. With 20 minutes left Borough opted to send on two attacking substitutes in Richard Worrell and Roland Namquita, replacing the full backs Andreas Loizou and Rickelle Christian. They changed to a three at the back formation with O’Cearuill adopting his more customary position in the centre of the trio. Worrell quickly had the ball in the net but was rightly ruled off-side. Play became very open with Harefield naturally able to exploit the extra space at the back although they were never able to test Bozkurt seriously. The Harefield defence produced some fine blocks of Borough shots as the pressure on them was increased and in the 87th minute Borough were rewarded when Cox was left unmarked to head home Fenton’s corner from the left from just a few yards. Harefield tried to play out time in the corners with no great success and Borough were able to mount several stoppage time sorties but the best they could muster was another left wing corner which the hosts just managed to repel. The defeat leaves Borough with a 50/50 League record of 2 wins 2 defeats and 1 draw with 6 goals both scored and conceded.
