Game NotesBorough completed their seasons campaign with a visit to the Garden Walk home of Royston Town who had already been crowned League Champions. A crowd in excess of 500 turned out hoping to see “The Crows” sign off from the Spartan South Midlands League in some style and were not disappointed as the home sides quality shone through from the start and they are clearly worthy Champions. A rather tired looking Borough were comprehensively outplayed in the first half and but for some outstanding saves by ‘keeper Ryohei Tamai the score would have been embarrassing by the interval. Even so he picked the ball out of the net three times and Royston had already won a series of corners and gone very close before John McGrandles seized on one only half cleared to drive it low into the net in the 11th minute from some 15 yards out. Borough produced little to trouble the home ‘keeper although Andreas Loizou hit an early half chance straight at him and Dewayne Clarke sent a fine shot just wide. But Royston moved the ball around with supreme confidence with Borough often at full stretch to repel them and it was no surprise when an unmarked McGrandles cleverly flicked home the second over Tamai’s head from close range as another corner was knocked down for him in the 34th minute. In the final minute of the half Ross Dedman could only help a Luke Robins cross shot from the left into his own net. Humiliation seemed on the cards after the interval when Kaan Fehmi smashed a close range shot high into the net in the 51st minute but Borough began to put some promising moves of their own together although the need for Tamai’s heroics was far from over. The breakthrough came in the 76th minute when substitute Christopher Morgan turned quickly inside the area to smash home a twelve yard shot off the inside of the post. In stoppage time, Dean Fenton ran clear in the inside right channel onto a long ball and drove home an accurate low cross shot as he entered the area to give the score respectability. And it could have been even better for between the goals Morgan brought a fine diving save out of the Royston ‘keeper as he pushed a low free kick just wide of his left hand post. Borough will finish either 4th or 5th depending on the outcome of Aylesbury Uniteds outstanding game but either position will be their best ever placing in the Spartan South Midlands League.
