Game NotesAllthough in a League with no play-offs a tussle for 4th or 5th position is of little significance it seems to have added sufficient interest to ensure 90 minutes of skilful endeavour at the end of which Borough had consolidated their hold on 4th having increased their lead from 5 to 8 points. But it was “The Ducks” who started more promisingly with Borough central defenders Ross Dedman and Charles Douse under sustained attack and doing well to prevent the hosts creating any clear cut opportunities to test the mettle of busy ‘keeper Ryohei Tamai. In this they were assisted by the outstanding performance of midfielder Dewayne Clarke, whose composure under pressure and fine distribution never wavered throughout, and by fellow midfielder Stephen Obeng in a more defensive mode. Little threat was being posed to the United goal at this stage although as the half wore on Borough came more into the picture and an even end to end game ensued. Borough seemed certain to take the lead just before the interval when hesitancy in the home defence forced ‘keeper Jack Sillitoe to race out of the area and although he just got to the ball first the clearance was picked up by Dean Fenton who sent what was probably a goalbound strike towards the open net which hit Borough’s Andreas Loizou on the edge of the box and he turned quickly to chip the ball towards the roof of the goal and produce an outstanding push over by Sillitoe as he raced back towards his line. Borough started the second half the more purposeful team and both Loizou and Fenton blazed early opportunities high over. When a corner was cleared just beyond the area Clarke unleashed a rocket of a low shot through a crowded box and Sillitoe again thwarted Borough with a superb diving save to his left to push it round the post. It was the introduction of another vastly experienced player, Lloyd Opara, which finally decided the game as within a few minutes he threaded his way through down the right and sent over a pinpoint low cross which was swept home at the far post by Chris Morgan who might still have been on the bench himself had a warm-up injury to a team mate not necessitated his pre-match “promotion”. Shortly after scoring he was replaced by defender Nick Nicou as Borough rightly anticipated a late onslaught from their hosts . This duly materialised with their substitute Joey Acheampong being at the heart of many dangerous situations and a series of corners were conceded presenting a nightmare test for the Borough defence as central defender John Mulholland towering head and shoulders over everybody joined in and he seemed certain to equalise when he met one from the left to send a thumping header arrowing towards the angle of bar and post but Tamai pulled off a save of the same quality as Sillitoe’s as he somehow got up to clutch and hold on to it at the last second. He was less assured on another occasion when he could only push a ball away and although it was fired back across goal it flashed low just past the far post. In the dying seconds another corner seemed certain to result in an equaliser at the far post from a scramble a few yards from goal but somehow Tamai emerged from the melee with the ball safely in his grasp. Borough would now have to lose all their last three games and “The Ducks” winall theirs but both Clubs have yet to meet League leaders Royston Town who cemented their lead at the top, now 5 points, thanks to Dunstable Town’s goal-less draw at Hadley. On the evidence of todays game both Borough and Aylesbury United can look forward to two enjoyable encounters next season and it would not be unrealistic to suggest that on those occasions both Clubs might be pursuing higher ambitions than 4th/5th place.
