Game NotesAlthough nominally the home team the unresolved floodlight problem at Coles Park necessitated the switch of venue to “The Greens” fine Pancake Lane pitch. Borough started brightly and created two early half chances one being a low cross shot from Roland Namquita which flashed a few feet wide. But as the half wore on it was Leverstock who looked the more determined side and they then wasted several fine opportunities of their own, especially when their first real chance after a few minutes play was fired well over the bar on the turn from a central position some ten yards or so from goal; and later a far post free header was planted wide. Borough’s best chance was a close range downward Dean Fenton near post header from Junior Diantomba’s cross from the left which produced a save of real quality from Carl Tasker as he threw himself down to reach the ball on the line at the foot of the post. But it was no real surprise and certainly not undeserved when Leverstock found the net after 37 minutes as they powered into the penalty area from the left and Dan Griggs screwed his shot into the net off the inside of the far post. After the interval Borough stepped up a gear and certainly enjoyed the better of the second half. Leverstock defended stubbornly and denied Borough any gilt edged chances but the introduction of an additional striker – Christopher Benjamin – increased the threat with his speed and outstanding close control. But it was not until the 74th minute that Borough equalised as a prolonged assault saw shots repeatedly blocked before Namquita seized the opportunity to blast a loose ball goalwards from some ten yards and it ricocheted its way through the packed goalmouth into the corner of Tasker’s net. The game now opened out but Borough’s purple patch continued and eight minutes later Namquita scored what was to be the winner from close range after Fenton had burst through and squared the ball to him. Of necessity Leverstock responded forcefully and won several free kicks from which they always looked dangerous with fine deliveries from their captain Lee Bircham and it was fortunate that Borough who have sometimes lacked height at the back this season were not thus handicapped on this occasion with Diantomba, Dewayne Clarke and Charles Douse all of six foot plus stature. Even so ‘keeper Ryohei Tamai was forced to push one tricky effort from Bircham away from the top angle for a corner. Borough’s biggest escape came when Tamai parried a close range shot but only into the path of an onrushing striker who blasted an unstoppable shot against the bar. Wisely, Borough did not settle for all out defence but opted to relieve the pressure by going in search of a clinching goal and it was Borogh’s turn to curse the cross bar when Fenton smashed his ten yard shot against it at the end of a flowing move. As so often happens in close fought cup ties Tasker ran upfield to join his attack when an injury time corner was won but he was denied the opportunity to make history for himself as a Borough head got to the ball first and in the remaining few minutes Leverstock were unable to create any clear cut opportunities to force extra time. In the final Borough will meet the winner of the Hillingdon Borough v Tring Athletic tie on a neutral ground and date not yet announced.
