Game NotesA game full of fierce endeavour, incident, thrills and spills from start to finish saw Borough return with three points for which they have rarely been forced to work harder. After some even opening exchanges Borough took the lead when Darrell Cox cleverly beat an off-side trap in the 9th minute to run clear and confidently chip the onrushing ‘keeper Matt Deamer. Long but in vain were the home teams protests for although two Borough players were certainly offside just inside the Saints half, Cox was not one of them as he timed his forward run perfectly to take advantage of the hesitation. Not until the Home team manager had been banished from the dug out was the game able to continue. Deamer, whose rushes for goal to successfully fly-kick clear were a repeated feature of the game, was fortunate that there were several covering defenders when he raced out wide to the right and clumsily brought down Christopher Morgan as he raced clear so escaped with a yellow. Six minutes later Borough’s lead was doubled when Morgan threaded a pass into the path of Cox in the inside left position just inside the area and he quickly despatched an accurate low cross shot into the corner giving Deamer no chance. No one expected St. Margaretsbury to be unduly fazed by these setbacks and so it proved as they hit back strongly and seemed certain to score when a ball found a striker only a yard from goal at the far post which was somehow scooped up and over. Martin Stickland lifted a clear shooting opportunity from a central position on the edge of the penalty box high over the bar. But “The Bury” were right back in the game when a superb passing movement shredded the right side of Borough’s defence and when the ball was sent in low Leigh Rose quickly drove a low ten yard shot past Borough ‘keeper Damos Horvath in the 34th minute. Borough had made few clear cut chances after their goals but Junior Diantomba wasted a glorious opportunity in a one-on-one situation similar to that which Cox had finished and Dean Fenton later did likewise. The half finished with a sustained spell of Borough pressure ended when Fenton moved on to a loose ball centrally and just outside the area only to lash it high over the bar. The second half belonged to the home side in terms of possession and it was the Borough defence which preserved the points. A clever hooked shot early on by Cox just sailed wide to deny him a hat-trick but Deamer was not called upon again for any spectacular heroics as St. Margaretsbury steadily upped the pressure, but they too failed to seriously test Horvath’s mettle as he dealt confidently enough with everything that came his way. Matters were not helped when Fenton received his second yellow card (nine were issued in all) leaving Borough to battle through the last fifteen minutes a man short. As stoppage time approached St. Margaretsbury’s determined probing grew ever more threatening and in the five added minutes Borough’s defence was bombarded with a non stop barrage of high balls as with all hands to the pump at the back there was no relief from the pressure as desperate clearances were inevitably collected and immediately fired back in. Borough striker (and Captain) Cox dropped back to add his height and experience to great effect in repelling the high ball onslaught and “The Saints” could do no better than win a succession of corners leading to some frantic scrambles in one of which Horvath somehow got down in front of a striker with the goal at his mercy only a yard or so out to deflect the ball up and over; and a goal line clearance saved the day when all seemed lost. As a result of Cup draws this was the 6th meeting of the Clubs during the last two seasons and Borough have managed to come out on top in all of them – but only by a one goal margin in five of those games.
