Game NotesThis was an exciting match full of endeavour and fortunately Borough showed great improvement on the lack-lustre display which had seen Hertford Town leave Coles Park with three vital points the previous Tuesday for without such betterment a heavy defeat against high-flying opponents would have been inevitable. Even so AFC were on top throughout the first half in which Terry Billy on the left wing and in particular Moses Olelaye, the midfield orchestrator, were difficult to contain and two yellow cards were earned through Borough’s efforts to frustrate Olelaye’s contribution. Despite the presence of beanpole striker Dean Whittaker towering over all other players he was not really able to threaten the Borough net with headers although naturally won most aerial challenges further from goal. Clear cut chances were few and far between although Borough ‘keeper Damos Horvath did well with a dive to his right to push away one low effort. The only goal of the half arrived just before the interval after an outstanding bout of quick passing shredded the left side of Borough’s defence and when the cross was sent over Billy came flying in to force the ball home at the far post. Borough had the better of the second half proceedings and Ross Dedman met a corner from the left at the far angle of the six yard box with a thunderous volley which AFC ‘keeper Nigel Blower somehow beat away. The threatened equaliser arrived with fifteen minutes left as Blower, not the tallest of keepers, advanced from his line to collect a free kick flighted in from the left by Christopher Morgan but was easily outjumped by Junior Diantomba who glanced the ball over him and into the empty net. AFC raised their game as both teams went for the extra two points and Horvath did well to grasp cleanly a low free kick blasted through the wall from a central position. But in the closing minutes and stoppage time it was Borough who enjoyed the greater share of possession and forced several corners taken by Morgan from one of which a mistimed intervention by a defender went very close to being a decisive “sliced” own goal. But any result except a draw would really have been an injustice. Sharing the spoils was an outcome which did neither Club any favours as the 2 points dropped left AFC 7 points behind the two Championship chasing “Towns” Royston and Dunstable who both recorded 2-1 wins. For Borough it meant Aylesbury United who won 1-0 closed the gap between third and fourth to 2 points. All of these Clubs have played 35 games so have 7 left.
