Game NotesPrior to kick off Haringey received their second “Premier Division Team of the Month” trophy (for February this time) from League President Brian Smith and Andy Passmore of League Sponsors Molten Sports.
Haringey then cruised to a convincing win over the team they will meet in the League Challenge Trophy at the end of the season. While the result can hardly have boosted Hillingdon’s confidence, Haringey need to remember that only a few weeks ago Hillingdon suffered a four goal League reverse against Tring Athletic but then went on to beat them 1-0 in their Trophy Semi Final last week. Haringey took 13 minutes to open the scoring when Christopher Morgan ended a fine move down the right with a well flighted cross from the bye-line which Dean Fenton raced forward to smash into the roof of the net from a central position only a couple of yards from goal. The second followed five minutes later when a massive clearance from defence was miskicked by a defender just inside his own half and Darrell Cox ran through to take control of the ball and beat the last defender before drawing the ‘keeper and angling home a clinical finish low in the corner to the right of him. Three minutes later the Morgan/Fenton combination conjured up a goal very similar to the first with Fenton just nudging home a high ball at the far post which might even have flown in without his help. Haringey ‘keeper Ryohei Tamai was not seriously tested in the first half with Hillingdon looking most threatening from corners. Hillingdon thought they had a fair shout for a penalty when Andreas Loizou’s challenge appeared to catch a striker without touching the ball but the Assistant close by with a clear view kept his flag down and nothing was given. Haringey continued to look comfortably in control as the second half started and increased the lead when a risky diagonal back pass never reached the ‘keeper as Fenton was onto it in a flash and whipped it away from him just as he was about to collect it on the edge of the penalty area and controlled it well to turn it into the vacant net. In the 68th minute it was really game over as Fenton again finished low and clinically. Haringey relaxed and Tamai had to produce two fine saves, the second an outstanding leap to tip a ball away from just under the angle to his left but Hillingdon were not to be denied and twice worked their way through the Borough defence to finish with two close range efforts from Lee Armitt and Chris Drake in the 79th and 85th minutes. Haringey then upped their game to its previous level for the remaining time and Morgan finished off a well worked move down the right with a precise drive from some fifteen yards low into the corner and well beyond the reach of visiting custodian Steve Windegard
