Borough won the LEAGUE CHALLENGE TROPHY at Reynolds Fields but were pushed all the way by a determined Hillingdon Borough side who started the brighter of the two teams and often looked threatening but without creating any really clear cut opportunities. When Borough got into their stride, tricky winger Christopher Morgan proved a handful for the Hillingdon defence and Borough’s first real chance came when Roland Namquita’s header from one of his crosses flashed inches over the bar in the 25th minute. Namquita burst through onto a half chance five minutes later but mishit his snapshot well wide. Darrell Cox got his head to another Morgan cross but again could only send the ball just too high. Hillingdon closed the half applying considerable pressure and should have taken the lead seconds before the interval but Daniel Mehmet somehow hooked the ball wide from very close range. Borough opened the second half with greater determination and were rewarded after only five minutes when Rickelle Christian, who might not have been on the field but for a warm up injury to usual left back Demetri Stratis, sent over a long diagonal ball from wide out left which Dean Fenton turned back across the goal where Darrell Cox pounced to sweep the ball into the roof of the net. Borough were fairly comfortably in control after that with Dewayne Clarke and the more defensive midfielder Stephen Obeng dominating the middle of the park. Borough thought they had doubled their lead when ‘keeper Sam Beagle was well into the net together with the ball following a corner – photographic evidence shows the ball was completely over the line – but were denied by the inability of the Assistant Referee to see through the crowded goalmouth. Cox brought a superb flying tip-over save from Beagle twenty five minutes into the half and the tiring Morgan was replaced by Christopher Benjamin. But as was to be expected Hillingdon threw everything at the Borough defence as the game entered its closing stages and Charles Douse and Nick Nicou were severely tested with Douse making one difficult and vital last ditch tackle without conceding a penalty. Andreas Loizou who ran himself into the ground and finally had to be replaced through cramp by Cedric Lakole ten minutes from time, also won a vital tussle to concede a corner as a speedy forward raced in from the left along the bye-line again surviving a penalty appeal in the process. Ryohei Tamai was now the busier ‘keeper and Hillingdon just failed to force the ball over the line as it flashed to and fro across the goalmouth on several occasions. Hillingdon ‘keeper Beagle made the customary upfield excursions to join in when corners were won without ever having the chance to be an unlikely saviour. But an equaliser seemed certain in the dying seconds as with Tamai grounded the loose ball was driven low towards the near post from just a few yards but Christian somehow managed to get back and stretch out a foot to divert the ball wide for a corner and extra time was avoided – which was just about the outcome Haringey deserved on the balance of play overall and in the light of their non awarded second “goal”.
