Game NotesWith a strong swirling wind blowing straight down a somewhat bumpy pitch it was no surprise that Borough never reached the heights of excellence they have displayed in finer conditions. Colney Heath started the brighter of the two teams with the wind advantage and it was a relief when League top scorer Ian Cooper fired his early cross shot just the wrong side of the post. High long clearances were the order of the day with defenders often finding it difficult to cope with the the balls uncertain trajectory. The taller visitors were always dangerous at set pieces and in the air and Borough were relieved when Ricky Perks sent his free header from the middle of the six yard line over the bar as he met a cross from the left bye-line. But Ryohei Tamai in the Borough goal was never seriously tested although he did well to beat out a fierce free kick from the right and smother the rebound. The Borough attack had not really threatened the Colney goal by the end of the first half. Despite now playing against the wind it was the visitors who made the early running at the start of the second half and against the run of play when Borough took the lead six minutes after the restart. Chris Benjamin was adjuged to have beaten the offside trap to sprint straight down the middle onto a long through ball and got the better of ‘keeper Tom Blackman on the edge of the area to run on and tap the ball into the vacant net. Long though Colney protested at the lack of a flag the match officials were unmoved and the goal stood. Borough made few further chances after that until Darrell Cox brought a fine blocking save from Blackman. Colney kept going determinedly but the match seemed to be heading to an uneventful conclusion with Borough comfortably in control against ten men after the late dismissal of Paul Armstrong. But their search for a second goal backfired when an attack deep into stoppage time broke down with too many Borough players upfield and a long ball out of defence left Nick Nicou one on one with Cooper who cleverly controlled the ball and raced in from the right across the penalty area only to be upended by Nicou’s desperate attempt to catch up as he was about to pull the trigger. He did so successfully from the spot with a powerful drive to Tami’s left although the ‘keeper got a hand to it but could not quite turn it outside the post. Obviously a huge disappointment to lose two points which seemed safely in the bag in such circumstances but with realistic hope of the Championship now all but over it was less of a blow than it would have been two months ago and a point was probably sufficient as a just reward for the days performance. The most pleasing feature of Borough’s afternoon was the assured debut outing of new signing Ross Dedman who was always comfortable on the ball in the centre of midfield, can also play in central defence and whose performance also drew appreciative comment from visiting Manager Gary Phillips.
