Game NotesA Borough starting line up which included only six of the team which had played so superbly in the previous Tuesdays rout of Biggleswade United never reached a similar height of excellence but had created enough chances by the interval to have made the game safe. As it was they led only 2-0 with Christopher Benjamin bundling in the first goal after half an hour at the end of a goalmouth scramble created by a corner. Three minutes later the lead was doubled when a desperate attempt by Hertford to keep a ball in play as they attacked succeeded but backfired on them as Borough seized on the loose ball and with the blues left side of defence out of position a quick through ball sent Benjamin tearing through without an effective challenge to finish clinically low inside the keeper’s right hand post. Little had been seen of Hertford as a serious attacking threat by half time although Borough had been called on for some sturdy defensive blocking when corners were fired over. But it was a different story after the interval as Town seized the initiative straight away and forced Borough ever deeper and onto the back foot. Two fine chances to equalise were wasted in the first ten minutes and as Borough’s defence strove to cope, not always convincingly, with a stream of crosses and diagonal balls into its heart many chances were created but fortunately for Borough the home side continued to lack a cutting edge to complement their determined approach work. A free kick from way out on the right eluded everybody but rebounded off the far post into the grateful arms of Borough ‘keeper Ryohei Tamai and he then made a vital close range save from a close range free header to avoid what would have been a nervous last ten minutes. Borough made far fewer opportunities in the second half and an off-side flag thwarted them on the one occasion the ball was forced home. The introduction of Roland Namquita and Richard Worrell enabled Borough to relieve the pressure on the defence more effectively and Namquita somehow blasted a late effort against a defender on the line from virtually point blank range after Hertford ‘keeper Alex Elf had done well to parry a close range effort. Borough eased through a considerable period of stoppage time without any real scares.
