Game NotesBorough looked comfortably in control for the first twenty minutes and were gifted the lead in the fifth minute when a wicked “bobble” on the bumpy pitch caused visiting ‘keeper Sam Tanner to fumble a simple cross from Lasalle Simon from the left bye-line over his shoulder. Lloyd Opara hooked a shot high but just wide and Lloyd Mitchell closing in from the right blasted a fierce cross-shot just over; Paull Abbott also went close. But “The Citizens” equalised after 20 minutes when Adam Wallace muscled his way through the centre of Borough’s defence when a long high ball was allowed to bounce instead of being headed clear and although Borough ‘keeper George Anderson did well to block his close range blast Wallace just managed to scramble the loose ball home. After that a Welwyn win looked ever more likely as they upped their work-rate and began to move the ball around quickly and confidently. The remainder of the half was uneventful and the second half was punctuated by frequent stoppages which prevented the game from developing any kind of rhythm or momentum. Fabio Valenti scored the only goal of the half in the 56th minute with a 25 yard free kick which swerved low into the left hand corner of Anderson’s net and although he got a hand to it he was just unable to push it wide. The introduction of Karl Lewis brought about a flurry of Borough pressure and when he burst through on the right and squared a low ball into the path of Danny Honeyball Borough’s best chance of the half was wasted by a first time shot way too high. Tanner tipped one Lewis shot over the bar but Welwyn soon regained their composure and never looked in serious danger of surrendering their lead as the game became ever more niggly, disjointed and generally uninspiring. Such good football as was played continued to be supplied by the visitors who produced a performance of a quality far in excess of that to be expected of a team in the lower half of the table. A miserable night for Borough was made worse with the news that Cockfosters had secured a point at Hertford Town with a late equaliser after Hertford had missed a penalty to move themselves level with Borough on 27 points from the same number of games but with a goal difference inferior by three.
