TypeFA Cup Extra Prelim Round
Game NotesBorough overcame adversity to move fairly comfortably into the Preliminary Round of the FA Cup at the expense of their visitors from the United Counties League who had been runaway winners of that competitions Division One last season and arrived with a 100% record and with no goals conceded from their first two games. Even before kick off an injury to intended Borough ‘keeper Nick Christofi during the warm up necessitated his replacement by substitute ‘keeper Isaac Capello-Rukundo. Few clear cut chances were created in the first half. The visitors went close with a thumping header from a right wing corner which flew over the bar. But it was Borough who struck first when Jamie Brandon threaded a through ball into the path of Darrell Cox who coolly took it past the advancing keeper and slotted it home three minutes before the break. Borough dominated the opening stages of the second half but wasted many fine opportunities to make the game safe. Cox was denied by a goal-line clearance after he had again taken the ball wide of the ‘keeper, Rakim Richards thundered an unstoppable header against a post and ‘keeper Dan Green did well to get down and smother two close range efforts when a goal looked likely. But the situation changed when Borough ‘keeper Rukundo was forced off by injury with 30 minutes remaining and with no other ‘keeper on the bench central defender and Captain Nick Nicou took over the role. Charles Douse moved into the middle, Daniel Walker came on at right back and after a few minutes Bosun Adebaki was brought on to add height and steel in front of the back four. Kempston naturally seized the opportunity to step up a gear but Nicou dealt confidently with a series of high crosses and did well to punch one corner kick clear. The Borough defence restricted the visitors to half chances with a series of crucial interceptions and blocks and Nicou was never seriously tested by goalbound efforts although it was helpful that Kempston had clearly left their shooting boots behind. Borough were still looking dangerous up front and Richard Worrell should have made the game safe when he cut in unchallenged from the left but opted to go for goal himself only to be thwarted as Green advanced and spread himself well when two colleagues were waiting in the middle to knock the ball into the open net. But in the 79th minute Richards effectively settled the issue when he raced forward from midfield to position himself perfectly to receive a ball rolled in from the right which he unfussily tucked past Green from around the penalty spot. Kempston continued urgent efforts to claw the deficit back right to the end but Borough massed well in defence and took the opportunity to launch long balls towards the corner flags as they successfully ran down the clock without any real scares. In the Preliminary Round on 3rd September they will entertain fellow Spartan Premier Division side Berkhamsted who were winners of the League’s Division One last season.
