Game NotesA slaughter, but not one which had looked likely at half time with Melvin Thompson having worked himself into space on the edge of the penalty area to hammer a hard straight drive just inside the 'keepers right hand post in the 39th minute to reduce the deficit to a single goal. Borough started the brighter of the teams and wasted a couple of early half chances and enjoyed a fair share of possession in the first half but their build-ups although displaying plenty of skilful football were somewhat over-elaborate and gave the Harefield defence time to mass back. But there were too many individual errors which eventually led to promising moves coming to nothing and enabling the home side to sieze the initiative. One such intercepted crossfield ball between the fullbacks was intercepted and led to the first goal scored by Chris Drake from close range in the 22nd minute. Harefield's equally fine flowing movements carried more menace and Borough were not allowed the same amounty of time to compose themselves at the back and a close range blast had already been smashed against the underside of their bar to bounce down and be scrambled clear before Arion Maleknia added the second in the 35th minute. Borough gained confidence from their excellent play in the remainder of the half and Thompson's goal was well deserved but hopes of a comeback were quickly dashed after the interval when Adam Willis was given time to pick his spot from a few yards out in the 50th minute and Murray Williamson added the fourth in the 53rd minute after which Harefield took total control. Borough rarely threatened the composure of "The Hares" defence after the interval and bustling striker Danny Buckle twice finished clinically in the 58th and 71st minutes before towering substitute Alex Brown headed the seventh in the 87th minute - doubtless having been sent on for that precise purpose given the relatively small stature of the Borough defence - and Willis rubbed the final salt in the wound as he curled the ball accurately into the far top corner as he was given space to steady himself on the right of the penalty area. Borough can take some comfort from the knowledge that they will face few sterner tests than this game in the remainder of the season and will probably play worse on occasions and win. As it happens, Borough's humiliation was actually exceeded on the night by Holmer Green who also shipped eight goals, and on their own ground too, without even notching a reply - Leverstock Green being their tormentors.
