Game Notes
The first half was an energetic end to end affair at the end of which Borough just about deserved their solitary goal lead secured after 32 minutes when a long free kick from out wide on the right by Niko Salapatas deceived everyone except Daniel Ailey who raced into the space at the far post and with the slightest of touches directed it downwards into the corner. Earlier Lawrence Constanti had gone closest for Borough with a powerful 40 yard blast which visiting ‘keeper Abdal Ahmed repelled with his knees but unfortunately there was no Borough player anywhere in the vicinity to pounce on the loose ball. Kingsbury’s attractive approach work was not matched by their finishing and Borough’ keeper Brian Sealey was never seriously tested other than in respect of dealing with high crosses all of which he confidently grasped. The second half was a totally different affair dominated from start to finish by “The Tigers” and the rather dimunitive Borough back four of Theo Charalambos, Andreas Loizou, Edmund Arthur and Rakim Richards, significantly disadvantaged in terms of height and weight except for Richards, was tested to the limit doing very well to restrict the visitors haul to just one point. Unfortunately, a somewhat lethargic display elsewhere meant that their often desperate clearances were easily picked up by the opposition and the pressure immediately put back on them. The surprise was that it took Kingsbury twenty five minutes to equalise as Sealey had been in regular action. Early in the half Kingsbury unleashed two rocket shots from some distance which would have burst the net had they been on the target which they only narrowly missed. But strangely, when Kingsbury got closer range chances their finishing lacked power and precision with two fine opportunities driven straight at Sealey. Borough conceded a stream of corners and free kicks which were always going to be extremely difficult to cope with given the threatening presence of beanpole striker Ehad Ponxha but Sealey and his hard pressed defenders generally managed to get a hand, a head or a block on the ball at vital moments although it was a nervy experience throughout. The equaliser arrived when Hardy Pinto Moreira got across his covering defender to deflect home a diagonal cross from the left. Kingsbury seemed certain to take the lead a few minutes later but Borough were saved by a superb stretching clearance off the line by Charalambos. Borough had rarely troubled Ahmed in the second half but did force him to tip over a dipping long shot and from the resultant corner an unchallenged Richards restored Borough’s lead in the 78th minute with a firm header into the roof of the net from very close range. But Kingsbury continued to look the more threatening team and only five minutes later Borough gave the ball away cheaply once too often and Wadah Ahmadi was on hand to sweep the ball home from close range as yet another cross was launched into the danger area. Borough had to deal with more aerial threats before the final whistle but deep into injury time Jamie Brandon wasted Borough’s best chance of the evening when having worked a clear opening he screwed his eight yard shot wide of the far post with virtually the last kick of the match.
