Game Notes
The opening stages were somewhat scrappy with neither side providing the ‘keepers with any serious test. Borough fell behind to a curious goal in the 30th minute when a shot ricocheted off another home player onto the inside of a post and bounced across the goal and in off the other post. That the ball was in the net seemed to come as a surprise to both teams and it was credited to James Holland. The reverse spurred Borough to greater efforts and Daniel Ailey often threatened but was thwarted by off side flags. Jamie Brandon was desperately unlucky not to equalise with his precise header as he raced in from the left to meet a diagonal ball which rebounded off the inside of the post into the arms of ‘keeper Casey Walker . But he was not to be denied for long for in the 42nd minute he collected another long cross from Ailey and steadied himself before curling an unstoppable shot into the far top corner. An undistinguished period of play opened the second half and Brandon miskicked in front of an open goal but when Ailey set him up again he made space for himself before turning to fire home low from six yards. Ailey was then replaced by Reece Wilson, making his Club debut, and it was not long before he was in action and forcing Walker to make a fine close range save low down at the foot of a post. But after 10 minutes Wilson did find the net as he moved into the area from the left after a sustained bout of Borough pressure and sent a powerful shot swerving inside the near post. After that there was only one team in it and a flowing move ended with David Boal teeing up Brandon who completed his hat-trick with a clinical finish low into the far corner. Borough’s back four were never greatly troubled throughout the second half and ‘keeper Greg Thurstans never looked like having to deal with anything threatening. The scoring was completed in the 80th minute when Reece was brought down as he was about to cut into the area from the left and Miguel Martins met the free-kick at the far post with a point blank header which secured a repeat of January’s Premier Division Cup win on the same ground by the same result and scoring sequence.
