Game NotesBorough have often turned in excellent performances against top teams without getting the reward they deserved but that “record” was terminated by a superb performance against the League leaders who arrived, and left, nine points ahead of their nearest rivals. Borough tore into their visitors right from the off and maintained their domination of the game throughout the first half. It is a measure of Borough’s ability that although Chalfont have scored more goals per match (2.4) than any of their rivals, as well as having by far the best defensive record and goal difference, ‘keeper Greg Thurstans was never seriously tested, such was the speed with which those in front of him closed down or blocked anything which looked likely to give him cause for concern. A clash of heads midway through the half saw one half of Chalfont’s impressive central partnership, Ray Walsh, temporarily sidelined for bandaging and by the time he returned Borough should have been two up. First Daniel Ailey’s fierce cross shot rebounded from the foot of a post to safety and a few minutes later Ailey was visibly frustrated with himself as he directed an unchallenged header wide from a central position a few yards from goal. Borough’s back four of Rakim Richards, Charles Douse, Edmund Arthur and Demetri Stratis were superb throughout and although not the tallest defence in the League coped admirably with high balls. Chalfont were kept too busy repelling Borough’s raids to supply their lightning fast winger Terrell Lewis with the type of service he needs to thrive and Stratis was his equal for speed anyway. Rather, it was the speedy runs and trickery of Borough’s Jamie Brandon which caught the eye with his final through balls just being intercepted. Chalfont threatened on two occasions when Lewis sent over a short cross from the bye-line which was headed just over from close range and when Charlie Strutton met a corner from the left with an unstoppable bullet header, that too flew just over. But Borough were not to be denied and in the 38th minute Theo Charalambos sent a long perfectly weighted free kick from the left to the far post where Ailey got the faintest of touches before it nestled low just inside the net.. As was to be expected, Chalfont stepped up a gear after the interval but the Borough back line continued to exude confidence as well it might bearing in mind the protection offered by the tireless efforts of Marvin Walker, Guy Koffi and David Boal in the centre of the park in front of them. Walker having run himself to exhaustion was replaced by Bosun Adebaki, taking a more advanced role than usual, and a smooth transition maintained Borough’s well established pattern. As a precaution Ailey, having been cautioned was replaced by Shane Wyllie who also gave the visiting defence plenty to occupy their attentions. Chalfont brought on a “Rory Delap” type throw-in specialist in the person of Ben Stack but neither his missiles nor corners ever created any real chances. The closest Chalfont came to an equaliser was when Stratis somehow managed to slice the ball upwards on to the bar when facing his own goal just a yard out and with a striker closing in for the kill. Deep into injury time there was one last scare as Chalfont won a throw in close to the corner flag and poured forward to meet Stack’s delivery to the near post but wasted their opportunity with a foul and when Thurstans blasted the free kick upfield referee Sean Smith immediately brought proceedings to a close with Borough having inflicted only the 4th defeat on the leaders from their 33 matches. Obviously their record is such that they must be capable of better performances but on the night there is no real doubt that the better team won.
