Game NotesBorough secured a hard earned point from a thrill a minute game in which there was no shortage of opportunities being created but missed throughout the whole ninety minutes . Borough started brightly and enjoyed the better of the first half exchanges but a serious head injury to ‘keeper Jamaine Edwards put him out of the game after only 10 minutes – an ambulance being required to transport him to Hillingdon Hospital where a number of stitches were inserted to close the gaping forehead wound. Unusually, Borough had no substitute ‘keeper on the bench and Nick Nicou took over necessitating Bosun Adebaki to move into the centre of defence and Andreas Loizou, himself making a return after some weeks out injured, came on at right back. Nicou was quickly in action and the assured manner in which he cleanly collected a high, deep cross at the far post engendered confidence in his abilty to perform in this unaccustomed role. Borough went on to the attack and it was “The Hares” keeper Andrew Haggers who was by far the busier custodian and turned in an unspectacular but solidly effective performance. In one sustained bout of pressure following a corner the ball was knocked against both posts from close range as a desperate scramble developed but somehow it stayed out of the net. Shortly afterwards it was Harefield’s turn to be frustrated by a post as a fierce cross shot, the best effort of the game which no ‘keeper could hope to have reached, crashed against the framework and rebounded to safety. Both sides made but wasted a number of chances often with shots which sailed well high and wide. After the interval it was Harefield who began to enjoy the lion’s share of possession with the main threat coming from their dangerous twin spearhead Sam Gomez and Jamie Arthur who were very adept at bringing down long high balls and holding them up with their backs to goal inviting central defenders Adebaki and Charles Douse to concede fouls in dangerous areas but they were never hurried into quick or reckless challenges, instead jostling cannily throughout and timing their eventual interventions perfectly to knock the ball away to safety or force finishing efforts to be snatched or inaccurate. Many of Harefield’s shots continued to be fired too high and momentum was often lost by over-hit crosses but inevitably Harefield finished the stronger as Borough’s exertions from the previous Thursday began to tell. Nevertheless Borough were far from out of the game and Jamie Brandon sent the best effort inches wide of the far post with a curling cross shot. Shane Wyllie burst through and forced Haggers into a brave block at the foot of a post. As the game drew closer to its finish Harefield attacked with ever increasing urgency as one point could not be enough to lift them out of the bottom two whatever happened elsewhere while Borough had no such pressing need of reward. Nicou somehow deflected a low shot out for a corner with an outstretched foot. It was now back to the wall time for Borough and striker Liam Farrell was withdrawn deeper to reinforce the right side of defence and staunch the flow of dangerous crosses. A careless challenge on the bye-line just a few yards from the edge of the penalty area spelt danger but, fortunately, the free kick was again over-hit and sailed harmlessly out of play. In stoppage time Theo Charalambos, who had been moved to right back in place of Loizou who had not really been fit enough to be brought into action so early, was perfectly positioned on the line to hack away what would have been a cruel decider. Few goal-less draws can have seen so many chances created but missed, and a 5-5 scoreline would have been a better reflection of the play for it was a highly entertainiong affair throughout and never a game where either side set out their stall just to stifle or employ safety first tactics.
