Game NotesBorough battled resolutely to bring back a point from their trip to Tring Athletic, the only Club with credible expectations of catching the leaders (Chalfont St. Peter ) and whose cause was made even more difficult by the two points dropped. Tring tore into Borough right from the off and immediately forced a corner which came to nothing but should have scored after a few minutes when a striker with time to spare just a few yards from goal blasted the ball high over. Greg Thurstans in the Borough goal spread confidence through the team with his assured handling of everything which came his way although Tring had more than enough fine chances to make the game safe by the interval but were repeatedly let down by poor finishing. As the half wore on Borough came much more into the game and the Tring defence was thoroughly tested but only a long range snap shot by Richard Worrell threatened home ‘keeper Tom Vincent and he caught it cleanly under the bar. Tring again started the second half with a determined onslaught and this time they were rewarded after only 2 minutes when a corner was cleared into the path of Jason Beck on the edge of the area in a central position and he drilled it low and hard into the right hand corner of Thurstan’s net. Although Tring enjoyed the lion’s share of possession throughout the half Borough often put together some flowing movements and Worrell missed a good chance to equalise when he met a well flighted free kick from the right at the far post but could not direct his header downwards. Tring had the ball in the net again but were denied by an off-side flag and in the 61st minute Worrell finished a swift breakaway movement to equalise with a cross shot drilled accurately into the corner giving Vincent no chance. With a point being of little use to Tring’s promotion ambitions they naturally stepped up the pressure but the Borough defence never buckled and successfully repelled a series of corners and free kicks while Thurstans continued to mpress with further fine saves. After one corner Edmund Arthur produced a clever flick header to direct the ball up and over the bar with Thurstans stranded off the line and when Tring did get the ball in the net following another corner the foul on Thurstans was so blatant that no-one could argue with the referees decision to disallow it. Tring seemed certain to score when a long ball out of defence was latched onto by a striker only for Charles Douse to execute an astonishing clearance as he raced back to catch up with him a few yards from goal and somehow managed to get a foot to the ball to lift it over the bar without committing a foul. Borough’s defence was at full stretch throughout and not helped when Bosun Adebaki was forced to limp off ten minutes from time necessitating Theo Charalambos dropping back to replace him. Tring’s finishing repeatedly lacked the quality of their approach work but it needed another outstanding save by Thurstans to deny Ryan Redford as he unleashed a fierce ten yard shot as he raced in from the left just before the end. At the start of stoppage time a long range shot was blasted at Thurstans who could only parry it as he dived to his right and an easy tap in ensued but again Tring’s joy was cut short by an off side flag. At the end of stoppage time yet another corner was half cleared with difficulty and resulted in a foul just a yard or so outside the penalty area. All the Borough outfield players raced back to form a barrier and the powerfully struck shot deflected upwards off the wall, and at the end of the ensuing melee Thurstans again got down to smother and gather the ball safely at the foot of the post. Rarely have Borough had to work harder to gain reward and it is disappointing that only one team can be promoted from the Spartan South Midlands League for Tring would certainly grace a Level 4 Division as much as the probable Champions Chalfont.
