Game NotesBorough were made to compete all the way for their victory after an opening spell in which they had looked to have the measure of their opponents and took the lead after 8 minutes when Daniel Ailey in a central position some ten yards out met a free kick driven in from the right by Theo Charalambos to rocket a header just under the bar. Borough made and wasted some good chances to increase their lead with Marvin Walker missing the best opportunity when he mis-kicked from only a few yards out. But Borough were beginning to allow space and make errors at the back and were relieved to see Holmer’s free-scoring Andy Shed fire their best chance just over when in space inside the penalty area. Early in the second half
David Boal was thwarted by a fine save from home ‘keeper Dan Little as he raced onto Ailey’s through ball and fired in a low shot. Holmer were looking ever more threatening and the more likely team to score – which they did in the 65th minute with a truly spectacular effort although not in the way they would have wished. From just a yard or two inside his own half and right out on the touchline Jack Dixon launched a massive backpass towards Little who had advanced off his line and the lofted ball swerved viciously over his head and dropped into the net. In Dixon’s defence it must be said that he was put under some pressure to hasten his kick by Ailey who ran back towards him from an offside position but did not succeed in touching the ball and somewhat to Holmer’s chagrin was evidently deemed not to have interfered. Jamie Brandon who had replaced the slightly injured Miguel Martins at half time made several promising runs down the left but all his finishing efforts flashed narrowly wide or over but there was little other threat from Borough as Holmer finished the stronger side and pressed forward with increasing urgency. Borough defended stubbornly and fortunately Holmer’s finishing was none too accurate. But they found the net in the 79th minute when Lee Putnam was given too much time to settle himself a few yards outside the area in a central position and his accurate low shot just defeated Brian Sealey’s desperate dive down to his right hand post to set up a nervous final period which a tiring Borough defence managed to survive with little respite being offered by any prolonged Borough counter attacks. In stoppage time Holmer thought they had secured a draw when a diagonal ball from the left was smashed home by a player racing in from the right but their joy was ended by an Assistant’s flag although there was controversy again as some thought that it was another player and not the scorer who was off-side.
