Game NotesBorough made the probable champions work hard for the points they needed to restore their 8 point lead over Tring Athletic following the cancellation of their fixture the previous Saturday. Chalfont enjoyed the better of the early exchanges but the Borough defence held firm and restricted them in the main to shooting from distance but they were unable to get any efforts on target such as to test the calibre of Greg Thurstans making a rare appearance in goal as the usual custodians were unavailable. Charlie Strutton went very close on two occasions. Borough worked hard in midfield and up front and while this provided important relief of the pressure on the defence they too were unable to unleash anything to worry home ‘keeper Mark Oliver. The speed and skill of Chalfont winger Terrell Lewis who operated on both flanks at some time during the game was always difficult to contend with but Borough full backs Rakim Richards and Demetri Stratis acquitted themselves well. Bosun Adebaki, also making his first appearance for some months due to work commitments returned at the heart of the defence and made one vital last second block and just got in a vital header to deflect a right wing cross away from onrushing strikers. When the first goal did arrive it was a messy affair out of keeping with the fine build ups seen before as a long throw in caused confusion in the Borough defence and it was Lewis who reacted first to nod the ball home off the inside of a post. Borough shrugged off this reverse and their determined attacks gave the home defence plenty of work although Chalfont continued to look very dangerous. Borough equalised in the 40th minute as Richard Worrell collected a low ball in from the right to turn and fire an accurate low cross shot into the corner from some ten yards. The second half was only a few minutes old when Demetri Stratis clipped a home striker at the end of a prolonged melee on the edge of the area but Thurstans got down well to grasp and hold onto Lewis’s hard struck but too central penalty. Chalfont continued to enjoy the greater share of possession but Borough defended with confidence although efforts on goal were now coming in from closer range with Thurstans now showing his mettle with some fine stops and Nick Nicou successfully executed a vital block at the end of one threatening move. But Borough were still looking dangerous too and mounted some spells of sustained pressure but were rather gifted an unexpected lead in the 72nd minute when Jamie Brandon fired in a low shot from distance which Oliver fumbled into his net low down at his right hand post. This inevitably spurred Chalfont to increase their tempo and they were rewarded only two minutes later when Lewis raced clear down the right and slammed over a hard low cross which Adebaki’s desperate lunge deflected into the roof of his own net. And “The Saints” were ahead two minutes later when a flowing move down the right enabled substitute Ryan Welsh to lash the ball home from around ten yards or so. Borough never looked out of it in the remaining time and the hosts were understandably nervous as they sought an equaliser but Chalfont wrapped it up a few seconds from the end of stoppage time when a speculative shot by Ben Stack from 25 yards out deceived Thurstans and dropped low inside his left hand post. Borough returned empty handed having played some of their best football of the season but had forced the League leaders to demonstrate why they occupy that position and have every reason to be proud of their performance.
