Game NotesBorough edged home against the team they will visit next month in the Premier Division Cup Semi-Final in a game of few clear cut chances. With none of the regular strikers available Nick Nicou, who has been virtually ever present as a central defender, was pushed forward as the lone target man and while he was unable to unleash any telling shots on goal he gave the visiting back line enough work to keep them occupied with their defensive duties. Midfield was a crowded area and Borough’s five were always ready to press forward in support as they enjoyed the advantage of a strong wind in the first half but for all their possession and promising approach work Leverstock ‘keeper Carl Tasker was never seriously tested. In fact it was Leverstock who had the best chance of the half when Demetri Stratis just clipped a striker in a desperate race onto a long ball a few yards outside the area in a central position. But the fiercely driven free kick glanced off the head of a visiting player and flew inches over the bar. It was the turn of the Borough back four to show their mettle in the second half with the wind making it difficult to judge headers to long balls or to get any great distance on them. But they acquitted themselves well with the new central defensive partnership of Charles Douse and Edmund Arthur, playing his second game since being released by Hanwell Town, holding firm throughout and Rakim Richards and Stratis limiting the danger from the wings although often at the expense of corners which always threatened danger when caught by the swirling wind. Stratis almost surprised the visiting defence with his persistence at the end of one surging foray down the left but Tasker made a vital block. Borough ‘keeper Brian Sealey had to withdraw with a neck injury early in the half leading to considerable stoppage time and Jamaine Edwards took over between the sticks but was not seriously tested as the wind often carried long passes through to him long before the chasing forwards could reach them. The only goal arrived in the 62nd minute as Marvin Walker threaded an accurate ball into the penalty area and David Boal beat the covering defenders to reach the ball first and direct it confidently past Tasker. Corners continued to present the greatest danger to Borough but deep into injury time a vital last minute interception by Douse as he raced back down the left jostling with with Leverstock’s top scorer Louis Austin and bringing him down just a few yards outside the area handed the opposition their best chance of the half; the ball was pumped into the crowded goalmouth but it was eventually scrambled clear and a minute later the final whistle confirmed that Borough had maintained their New Year 100% home record. Not a game to provide much of a thrill to any watching neutrals but a welcome three points for Borough after their four game winless run away from home.
