Game NotesBorough returned from Copthall Stadium having avoided defeat for the first time ever in what will probably be their last visit if Saracen’s plans for it materialise. But it was a performance for which “below par” is probably as generous a description as could be justified and a huge disappointment after the sparkling performance at Hanwell Town last Saturday. Borough seemed to have a good shout for a penalty in the 6th minute when Miguel Martins looked to have been brought down well inside the area but a free kick right on the line was the decision. When it was cleared ex-Borough player Karl Lewis worked space on the right to fire in a low cross shot which hit the framework at the far post but a goal was awarded on the strength of an Assistants advice that it had first swerved across the line. Borough took some time to get into their stride and should have equalised when a fine burst down the left by Martins enabled him to fire over a perfect low centre but unmarked top scorer Daniel Ailey somehow managed to screw it wide just a few yards from the open net. It took Borough until the 35th minute before the same combination led to the equaliser. Town goalkeeper James Noonan could only parry a ferocious drive from Martins and Ailey was on hand to nod the loose ball home. Seven minutes later Rakim Richards reacted quickest when a corner was only half cleared and drove home a low shot from some ten yards out. The second half is best forgotten as far as Borough are concerned. It did not help when the lively Martins was forced off injured and the highlight came when Borough ‘ keeper Jamaine Edwards advanced far off his line but failed to hold a corner and when a Town player drove the loose ball towards the empty net it was a relief to see Theo Charalambos perfectly positioned on the line to hack it clear. It was as well he did for Borough might otherwise have returned empty handed following a rash challenge by Richards, just three minutes from time, on the edge of the “D” enabled Paul Butler to smash in the equaliser which hit the underside of the bar and bounced down over the line. In a game with few positives from Borough’s point of view Edmund Arthur just signed from Hanwell Town made a confident debut in the centre of the defence and Demetri Stratis deserved a reward for his customary “action man” performance as a flying wing back throughout the second half . And Martins, for long a loyal occupant of the bench, seized his starting opportunity and produced a performance which will make it more difficult to revert him to a substitutes role. But most will recognise that this was not their finest hour and that it was an under-performance when compared with what we know they are really capable of both individually and collectively.
