Game NotesJust when a goal-less draw was on the cards in this exciting clash of promotion contenders, played with full blooded commitment but in a fine spirit throughout. substitute John Cole, accurately slotted home a loose ball in the 88th minute to finish one of many high speed raids by a determined Borough attack. Many present thought that there was a suspicion of off-side in his position but the officials whose opinion mattered could see nothing amiss and Borough garnered another three precious promotion points to lift themselves to second in the table with only five games left, and four of them at home. There was no lack of effort by either side but the first half saw few clear openings created although home keeper Tom Kennard produced a brave “one on one” block to thwart Ry Hardy on the edge of the penalty area as he raced clear. Ian Maitland went closest when he met a Roy Parkyn corner at the far post but his header which looked to have beaten the ‘keeper and all defenders flew across goal and just a whisker past the post. New Bradwell’s most threatening effort which seemed possibly goal-bound was actually blocked by one of their own players. Borough also witnessed an astonishing act of juggling as Greg Tite played “keepy-uppies” as he raced towards their goal at speed with Borough players snapping at his heels but his lofted long distance shot just dropped over the top – had it been Ronaldo and found the net no doubt a whole TV channel would have been devoted to it ! Borough had the better of the second half when they also enjoyed slight slope advantage and launched wave after wave of swift attacks without being able to find an incisive finish. Karl Lewis mis-kicked as the goal beckoned and as Borough’s frustration mounted play became somewhat untidy in the middle of the period. New Bradwell lacked nothing in skill but their rather small strike force was seriously disadvantaged against the height of Andy Stokes and Patrick Billong when the ball was in the air. Borough just about deserved their win and it was a pity that Coles glancing header as he flung himself at full speed at a superb cross from Hardy who had raced down the right wing to the goal line to flight the ball perfectly into the middle was not the winner as it flew agonisingly the wrong side of the far post ten minutes from time. But Cole had the last word with his precise but less spectacular finish two minutes from time. Borough had to repel a couple of free kicks from threatening positions as New Bradwell desperately sought an equaliser but their height advantage proved decisive and the danger was cleared.
