Game NotesDropping two points to a team struggling near the foot of the table was hardly the result to be hoped for on a day when all other five promotion chasers secured maximum points and dropped Borough down to fourth place. It could even have been worse as Borough found themselves three down after fifteen minutes with the defence having reverted to the careless habits which it was hoped were a thing of the past after a number of recent “clean sheets”. After four minutes a harmless looking free kick from the left was allowed to bounce in the centre of the Borough goal and Ben Ralphs was free to nod it unchallenged just inside the post. The second goal by Adam Smith came from the penalty spot after Patrick Billong was adjudged to have handled in the eleventh minute and four minutes later Richard Taaffe found space to move in from the right and collect the ball inside the penalty area to drill a low cross shot just inside the far post. Borough hit back purposefully and dominated the rest of an ill tempered first half making chance after chance which were either well saved by home ‘keeper Matt Lord, off target or blocked by some desperate last minute interceptions. Wayne Grant did head home but from an off-side position and Borough always looked dangerous from the many accurate set piece deliveries of Roy Parkyn. The vital breakthrough came four minutes before the interval when after a prolonged assault on the home goal Karl Lewis turned and blasted the ball high into the corner. The second half saw a marked improvement in the temper of the game with good football now the order of the day and Borough launched wave after wave of attacks forcing a number of corners from one of which Billong was unlucky to see his header hit the inside of the post and stay out. Bur Borough’s pressure seemed sure to tell in the end and it was Billong who successfully nodded home another Parkyn corner from the left to put them back in the game after seventy-six minutes. Borough ‘keeper Daniel White then produced an outstanding save as he flung himself low to his left to hold onto a fierce low drive from Taaffe who had found space as Borough pushed forward in numbers in their relentlessly quest for an equaliser. It came in the eighty-second minute when substitute Joe Galsworthy burst clear down the right and slung over a perfect cross which fellow substitute Joelle-Leon Phillips met with a spectacular flying header at the far post from the edge of the six yard box which rocketed into the net. Borough now looked the most likely winners especially when Ry Hardy fought his way to the left bye-line and sent over another inviting cross which the unmarked Galsworthy met a few yards from goal but could not quite direct his header downwards and it flew inches over the bar. Borough continued to dominate proceedings but in a Harpenden breakaway came very close to leaving empty handed as a fierce cross shot from inside the penalty area flashed fractionally wide of the top corner.
