Game NotesBorough paid a bitter price for their failure to put the game beyond reach of their hosts in the first thirty minutes which they totally dominated. Some incredibly near misses combined with a superlative performance from home custodian Simon Dent twice aided by the framework kept the scoresheet blank. One tip over from a near point blank header by Ry Hardy was particularly noteworthy. Borough’s defence had occasionally looked suspect despite the general one-sidedness of the game and when Cranfield broke away following a corner they were relieved when a “goal” was disallowed as the scorer was deemed to have fouled Karl Lewis as he burst through. The home side mustered only one dangerous effort in the first half and Daniel White did well to get down to smother a fierce low drive. Borough eventually found the net through Hardy’s precise low drive but he had been marginally off-side in the build up to the opening. Cranfield started the second half with greater confidence having weathered Borough’s opening onslaught and took a surprise lead when Tony Hill burst in from the right and unleashed a ferocious dipping drive just under the bar only six minutes into the half. Borough should have equalised immediately when Chima Obiji worked his way in from the right and rolled the ball into the middle where Ronardson Obinna somehow screwed it over the vacant goal from just a few yards out. Another half chance quickly fell to Obinna but he blasted it over both the keeper and the cross bar when a more composed finish would have been the better option. Borough’s defence was looking more uncomfortable as the game wore on and Keiran Donnelly headed what should have been an easy catch for White only inches past the post. Borough raised the tempo as the half developed winning several corners and in the 81st minute Hardy met one from the right to equalise with a thumping header. Borough now looked the more likely winners but disaster struck three minutes later when a misunderstanding between ‘keeper White and Melvin Thompson did result in an own goal as Thompson unnecessarily touched a shot sailing harmlessly wide and it rolled over the line agonisingly slowly with White wrong footed. There still seemed time for Borough to salvage a point and they put the home defence under severe pressure as they powered forward but were caught out in the final minute when Hill finished a quick breakaway with an accurate low cross-shot. Eight minutes of added time saw Borough still pounding forward relentlessly and Hardy might well have been due a penalty as he was desperately tackled a few yards from goal as he prepared to shoot but Cranfield massed back effectively and Borough left empty handed. Borough will probably play worse but win and fortunately are not likely to come up against many ‘keepers of equal ability to the impressive Dent. The defeat drops Borough to 4th in the table, three points behind the leaders in a Division where only 7 points now separate the top 8 teams.
