Game NotesFor the second time in 5 days Borough suffered defeat at the hands of Tring Athletic whose only loss this season has been to Wealdstone in the FA Cup, a team two steps above them in the Pyramid. Their experienced and well organised team never seemed unduly extended as they moved smoothly into the 2nd round of the Vase. After a cagey opening sparring session the visitors took the lead with a simple goal in their first real attack after seven minutes when ‘keeper Greg Thurstans raced off his line to collect a long free kick but failed to do so leaving Vinnie Iannone with a vacant goal into which to glance his header. Borough enjoyed the majority of possession in the first half and made the greater number of chances without once giving Tring ‘keeper Mike Underwood the chance to show his mettle. Daniel Ailey had promising opportunities with two headers but sent one high over the par and directed the second downwards but well wide. As in the League game the previous Tuesday Tring put themselves in command with an early second half goal as Andy Mullins met a corner from the left at the near post to flick home a clever header. Borough responded vigorously and brought on attacking substitutes Luke Bryan and Liam Farrell but were still unable to test Underwood seriously. It was thanks to some help from Tring that Borough got back in the game in the 70th minute when, under pressure from Bryan, left back Matt Myatt scored in his own goal when a firm downward header bounced up over Underwood and into the roof of the net. Thus the stage was set for a repeat of Tuesdays stirring finale when Borough’s late comeback rocked Tring without quite forcing an equaliser but on this occasion Tring remained composed and a fast breakaway move out of defence down the right ended with some desperate Borough defending around their own box and although Thurstans did well to beat out the first effort the ball fell conveniently into the path of the unmarked Nick Jackson who quickly controlled it and sent a low cross shot swerving just inside the post in the 81st minute. Borough never gave up and were unlucky when Bryan’s header from a corner crashed against the bar and fell for Nick Nicou only a few yards out but he volleyed it high over the bar apart from which the remainder of the match passed without any real danger being posed to the visitors lead.
