Game NotesThe evening began on a sombre note as a minutes silence was observed in memory of Haringey Borough’s “Gateman” of 30 + years service – Johnny Flynn - who died last Sunday. A game then ensued which he would have enjoyed hugely, as did all present, and it may well be that Borough will not take part in many such exciting and entertaining matches all season. Any result other than a draw would have been an injustice. 90 minutes of attractive and committed football followed with the first crucial incident arriving after just four minutes when Borough conceded a penalty as an awkward bounce resulted in the ball hitting Nick Nicou’s hand but Austin Byfield went full stretch and just reached the kick, driven hard and low to his right, at the foot of the post pushing it wide enough to thwart the kickers follow up. Takeley made most of the running in the early stages and Byfield was kept busy dealing competently with everything which came his way; but Borough’s attacking sorties although fewer, did not lack menace with the speed of Anthony McDonald, the close control of Lawrence Constanti and the powerhouse play of Bradley O’Donovan giving the home defence plenty to think about. Nevertheless, it was no great surprise when Takeley did take the lead midway through the half with a deceptive cross from the right which eluded all defenders and swerved just inside the far post. But Borough shrugged off this reverse and were level ten minutes later when McDonald raced onto a diagonal ball down the left to cut inside and unleash an unstoppable swerving rocket inside the far post from just inside the penalty area. The second half started evenly with both sides creating chances and some ten minutes into the half Byfield fell heavily as he collected a high ball and had to be replaced before leaving the ground with his arm in a sling and it was fortunate that Borough had a ‘keeper of Erbil Bozkurt’s experience on the bench. But it was Borough who took the lead midway through as Darrell Cox swivelled round on the edge of the area before drilling his shot low into the corner well beyond the ‘keepers reach. For the rest of the match Takeley launched a determined onslaught, severely testing the ability of the Borough defence which was not found wanting. Ten minutes after Cox’s goal Takeley were awarded what seemed to be a rather soft penalty when Daniel Gudgeon was ruled to have fouled an opponent as they tussled for the ball on the line just outside the right hand post and this time the kick was blasted home to Bozkurt’s left giving him no chance at all. Any sense of injustice Borough felt was compounded a few minutes later when debut making Andre Odetola appeared to be brought down just a few yards from goal as he chased a through ball only for the referee to rule against a penalty and book him for diving. As the game drew to a close the urgency and intensity of Takeley’s determination to bag all thre points increased still further and Bozkurt made one particularly credible and vital save as he went airborne to his left to push away for a corner a fierce shot which seemed sure to find its target. But Borough absorbed all the pressure, while now making very few chances of their own, to leave with their hard earned point from a performance made the more creditworthy as it was achieved with at least eight players who would have been contenders for a place in the squad absent through suspension, injury or work, thus demonstrating the Club’s accumulated strength in depth.
