Game NotesThe sparkling performance which had overcome Berkhamsted only 4 days previously was replaced by a lack lustre effort against a team ravaged by injuries whose replacements never let up for a moment in their determination to do their Club proud and justly succeeded. It was a mystery why Borough resorted so early to long ball tactics on what was the best pitch they are likely to play on this season and should have suited their favoured quick passing along the ground style. Instead it was the home side who made appropriate use of the opportunity to play such football. Fortunately their finishing was not up to the standard of their approach play. Borough drew an early diving save from home custodian Martin Patching but otherwise produced little to trouble him in the first half – unsurprisingly as the quality of their crosses and final balls was pretty dreadful. Borough improved a little after the interval and after 57 minutes Dean Fenton forced his way down the right and cut back a low ball from the bye-line which the onrushing Darrell Cox swept home from close range. Cox had the opportunity to wrap up the game minutes later but Patching did well to thwart him in a one on one situation. After that it was downhill all the way for Borough as Stotfold became ever more determined to salvage something from the game and Borough’ keeper Erbil Bozkurt was in regular action. Borough had already lived dangerously, shakily surviving several threats from corners but eventually when one was cleared out to the right Stotfold were left unchallenged to swing over a tempting cross which Lewis Holmes met with a powerful scoring header from the six yard line. Richard Worrell went close for Borough with a long range snap shot which fizzed inches the wrong side of a post but in the main it was Stotfold who now looked more threatening and hooked the ball just wide of the far post following another corner. And it could have been worse for late on a Stotfold striker burst clear down the left and seemed certain to find the net until a superb covering tackle from Joseph O’Cearuill forced the ball out for a corner. Borough mounted some late attacks too and also won corners but never looked likely to force a winner which would really have been more than they deserved.
