Game NotesBorough produced their best display of the season to date in what was their first game away from Coles Park. Although making fewer chances than has been customary the wastefulness which has plagued recent games was absent although they are unlikely to get so generous a gift as that which gave them a 4th minute lead very often. Dean Fenton progressed down the right and from the bye-line fired over a hard low cross which looked to be an easy collect for Town ‘keeper Mark Richardson low down at his near post but he unexpectedly fumbled the ball against the legs of Chris Benjamin closing in hopefully and it would probably have trickled over the line even if Benjamin had not skipped round the prostrate ‘keeper to make sure. Borough dominated the early proceedings and appealed loudly for a penalty which the referee chose to ignore in favour of “advantage”as the ball ran kindly for Darrell Cox who had only the keeper to beat from some ten yards or so but could only drive the ball straight at him. But it mattered little for in the 12th minute the lead was doubled as Benjamin progressed down the left and sent over a tempting cross at which Cox threw himself to send a scoring header right into the top corner. Borough continued to make good progress down both flanks with Benjamin in particular giving the right hand side of the home defence a hard time and making progress to the bye-line to fire over low crosses but Richardson was not going to make the same mistake twice and smothered all of them successfully before they could cross his area and reach the lurking Borough forwards. As the half wore on Hertford became more threatening and should have reduced the arrears when a low cross from the right was met close in at the near post but hooked high over the bar on the turn. A promising flowing move then ended in a fierce shot which reached a similar destination. Borough left back Vas Soteriou, the smallest player on the field, somehow got up to flick away a hard cross from the left which the striker racing in behind him seemed certain to bury. Erbil Bozkurt in the Borough goal was not severely tested by anything aimed at him and on the one occasion he was beaten when he moved out to his left to narrow the angle, but without success, Andras Molnar was perfectly positioned on the centre of the goal line to hack the ball clear. Dean Fenton missed a glorious chance in the closing minutes of the half as he met a cross from the left at the far post just a few yards out but his attempt at a net bursting volley flew inches over the bar. In the second half Hertford seized the initiative after the interval and their pressure was deservedly rewarded by a fine goal in the 57th minute when Sean Stock, among the smallest of participants on the field, rose highest in a crowd of players to power home a top corner header which gave Bozkurt no chance. But Borough refused to panic and it was end to end play for the remainder of the game with neither side being able to create any clear cut openings although Hertford might well have done better with a header from a right wing corner which was planted well wide shortly after their goal. The main threat to Bozkurts goal came from long high balls for which he had to withstand vigorous but fair challenges in his six yard area and did well to hold onto the ball on every occasion. Borough signalled that they had no intention of trying to play out time as they sent on prolific scoring substitutes Richard Worrell and Roland Namquita with fifteen minutes to play and although neither managed to test Richardson, the threat was there. Borough resolutely absorbed the inevitable late pressure as Hertford powered forward with increasing urgency and Bozkurt’s final test came deep into injury time when he again clutched and held a difficult high ball despite the challenge of two eager strikers.
