TypeFA Vase 1st Qual Round
Game NotesHaringey made it through to the second qualifying round of the FA Carlsberg Vase after beating Staines Lammas 3-1 in what turned out to be a match of the proverbial two halves.

A brace from Christopher Benjamin and a third from Darrell Cox ensured Borough progressed to the next round, although they had to come from behind after a lacklustre first half and it wasn't as easy as the final score might suggest.

Neither team settled easily into the match with both teams looking skittish in possession. The best of the early chances fell to Staines when Matt Baxter was left in space on the right side of the area but Erbil Bozkurt in the Borough managed to get a hand to his shot and gather the ball at the second attempt.

Haringey had to wait until the twelfth minute to carve out their first genuine chance. A long ball into the box from Rickelle Christian was headed back across goal by Benjamin but Dean Fenton couldn't quite make it to the ball and apply the decisive touch.

After this Borough started to impose themselves on the game and began to get the ball into the opposition box regularly and won numerous corners as they put more pressure on the Staines goal.

Haringey had a good chance to go ahead on the 22nd minute when Fenton had a run towards the box checked by a strong tackle that gave Borough a free kick on the edge of the box and earned Taylor Gough a yellow card. Fenton stood up to take the kick and fired in a powerful shot that looked goal bound, but unfortunately it hit Benjamin and bounced tamely wide of the goal.

Despite this increased pressure Staines still looked like they could offer a threat and when the ball was played down the left to Matt Baxter he managed to get to the byline and fire across a teasing cross that evaded Bozkurt but luckily Vas Soteriou was on hand to scoop the ball clear.

Staines were also the first team to have the ball in the back of the net on the half hour mark when a forward drive left Baxter with space in the area and he smartly finished but was adjudged to be in an offside position.

Soon after the scrappy nature of the match was underlined by a hectic five minutes that saw both teams hit the woodwork as various good chances on both sides went begging. Staines started the period when Shane Rideout brilliantly turned on the edge of the area and sent a tantalising cross over the box but no-one could get a touch on it and it was scrambled out for a corner.

The resulting corner was floated over to the edge of the area but a well placed Staines player could only hammer the ball against the right hand post. The ball was then cleared and the fast break eventually led to the ball reaching Paul Yiannakas who looked well placed in the area, but while his shot managed to beat the Staines keeper it couldn't beat the crossbar.

Haringey continued to force corners as the half came to a close but they couldn't convert these into a shot on target and test Josh Richardson in the Staines goal.

On the 44th minute Staines opened the scoring when Borough failed to deal with a ball across the face of the area and Jim Butler was on hand to fire the ball into the bottom right hand corner of the goal.

While Borough didn't have much of a chance to respond in the first half they more than made up for it in the second and were level within two minutes. A hopeful ball forward came back off Benjamin and Cox quickly picked it up and rifled it into the bottom left hand corner.

After the equaliser Borough started to play with more confidence and Staines began to quickly lose shape offering Haringey more chances.

The pressure quickly took its toll and Borough were ahead on the 54th minute. A long ball forward was brought down by Cox who neatly laid the ball off to Benjamin who skipped past two challenges and threaded the ball past the Staines keeper.

Haringey continued to push, although some careless play on the edge of the area gave Staines the ball in the area but they couldn't take advantage.

Borough almost got a third when Joe O'Ceaurill played a neat ball through to Dewanye Clarke who coasted past two defenders but the finish sent the ball just wide of the far post.

Staines were forced to come forward in search of an equaliser with Haringey looking to catch them on the break and in the 67th minute Borough managed to double their lead.

A fast break down the left by Cedric Lakole put Staines on the back foot and after he managed to get the ball across to Fenton on the right a well weighted cross found Benjamin whose shot was too powerful for the keeper to keep out.

Staines had a chance to snatch a consolation goal on the 85th minute when Baxter managed to win the ball in his opponent's area, but he couldn't lift the ball over Bozkurt.

Borough squad: Erbil Bozkurt, Rickelle Christian (Cedric Lakole 29), Vas Soteriou, Joseph O'Cearuill (Roland Namquita 65), Nick Nicou, Andras Molnar, Dean Fenton, Paul Yiannakis (Ben Butler 79), Christopher Benjamin, Darrell Cox, Dewanye Clarke
