Game NotesA much changed Borough side played inconsistently but did just enough to edge home against visiting Hadley. Borough started brightly although they were almost caught out by a swift break but a good opportunity was nodded just too high. Borough looked the more likely side to open the scoring and Richard Worrell blasted the best opportunity high and wide from a few yards out. Anthony Christian was using his speed to good effect down the right wing but against the run of play Hadley took the lead after 18 minutes when Borough ‘keeper Nick Christofi fumbled what looked like a simple collection of a long through ball as it bounced off his chest and the ensuing scramble ended with Darren Turner netting from close range. Borough then dominated the rest of the half and engineered a superb equaliser when Christian again burst down the right and laid the ball back to Cedric Lakole racing forward from his defensive role and he unleashed a perfect ball into Darrell Cox who controlled it and swept it home low into the far corner from 15 yards in the 32nd minute. Better was to follow six minutes later when Christian slipped the ball inside following another right wing sortie and Worrell collected it to turn and drive it home low and hard from 10 yards. After the interval Borough lost their way and Hadley seized the initiative aided by a deceptively strong wind which seemed to have got stronger as the game progressed. Borough’s defence never looked at ease with headed clearances being misdirected through the wind’s influence and Borough’s attacks being relatively infrequent. But after one miss in front of an open goal when the ball was skewed onto a post and stayed out they seemed to have given themselves breathing space when Worrell again finished clinically from inside the box with a low drive in the 70th minute. But Hadley were far from done for and their persistent pressure created several half chances and corners. From one right wing corner Ian Kirkwood, one of the smallest players on the field, powered home a well directed header as he got to the ball in front of Christofi who left his line but failed to make contact in the 79th minute. This set up a nervous quarter of an hour for Borough in which they never looked likely to secure the game with a goal of their own while defensive jitters allowed Hadley several half chances. An equaliser always looked on the cards never more so than when Edmund Arthur misdirected a clearance onto his own post and with sharper finishing Hadley would certainly have grabbed a point but fortunately for Borough their best opportunity was wasted when an unchallenged low shot from the edge of the area drifted just wide. Borough survived two confident appeals for penalties and the final whistle was certainly welcome.
