Game NotesBorough chalked up their third consecutive clean sheet and second consecutive solitary goal victory. Unfortunately, the score was the only similarity to the previous Tuesdays exceptional performance which had seen off runaway League leaders Chalfont St. Peter. Expressions such as “bread and butter win” and “mid-table end of season affair” spring to mind and such it may have been but it elevated Borough into 8th place and brought their points tally to 53 which is a total often previously requiring nearly two seasons efforts to accumulate in the past and they still have 10 games to play. It was a game not helped by a “bobbly” pitch clearly not conducive to fast, slick build ups along the the ground and unsurprisingly they were few and far between. Borough defended surprisingly deeply with lone striker Richard Worrell hopelessly isolated up front and receiving little in the way of service although it was helpful to Borough that the visitors felt the need to keep three or four defenders back to take care of him. Jamie Brandon and new signing Niko Salapatas tried to make long penetrating runs down the wings but with the ball never running “true” control was difficult and the final balls inside created little danger although two were deflected for corners and might just as easily have ended in the net. David Boal was his usual all action self and went close on three occasions drawing the outstanding save of the match from visiting ‘keeper Elliot Thomas as he dived to his right and just managed to push Boal’s powerfully struck ten-yarder past the post midway through the half. Biggleswade rarely threatened but did create an opening with one well worked move which put a striker clear on goal just inside the penalty area where his first touch let him down and the ball ran out harmlessly for a goal kick. Right at the start of the second half Borough caught United “cold” and straight from the off Salapatas worked his way down the left to roll in a short pass to Richards feet a few yards from goal but his first time effort on the turn sailed high over the bar. The Borough defence which had looked comfortable enough throughout the first half then became somewhat error prone, twice being endangered when balls expected to run out of play were just kept in and in a goalmouth scramble caused by one resultant cross Greg Thurstans did well to block a close range effort and fortunately the loose ball did not fall too kindly for the Biggleswade striker who could only scoop it up and over the bar from very close range. Borough introduced attacking substitutes Shane Wyllie and Liam Farrell and enjoyed the greater share of possession but never really tested Thomas again. Just when a goal-less stalemate seemed the most likely outcome a determined run by Wyllie in the 79th minute ended with him winning a free kick on the right and although it was cleared out wide to the left Farrell retrieved it and rolled it back for Brandon to send over a fine cross which right back Rakim Richards, who had advanced for the free kick and stayed upfield after its initial clearance, met with an unstoppable header into the roof of the net from the six yard line. Biggleswade applied some pressure in the remaining time but the Borough defence had regained its composure with Bosun Adebaki and Charles Douse now well in control in the middle and although Biggleswade forced a couple of corners they never came close to securing an equaliser.
