Game Notes
An entertaining game between two fully committed sides swung Borough’s way as they gathered momentum early after the interval following a first half in which Borough ‘keeper Jamaine Edwards had been the busier custodian, although neither ‘keeper had been seriously tested. Most of the first half danger came from set pieces and Borough had an early scare when Edwards advanced but failed to collect an outswinging free kick from the left but the header directed at the vacant goal landed on the roof of the net. Borough’s defence held firm against frequent long ball assaults and some tricky “Saints” play down the flanks and when they were finally beaten just before the interval by Joe Rudkin’s smart finish low inside a post they were reprieved by an offside decision. Borough then swept upfield and sent a cross shot smashing against the bar but also from an offside position. Borough began to move the ball around more purposefully in the second half and were rewarded when a flowing move in the 61st minute saw Jamie Brandon slip the ball inside to David Boal who reacted quicker than the covering defenders to take control of the ball and turn it home accurately from a central position some ten yards out. St. Margaretsbury continued with their combination of long high balls and swift raids down the flanks with the speedy Davey Edmee always looking dangerous when in possession and it was fortunate that the equally speedy Demetri Stratis was on hand to keep pace. Borough conceded a number of corners and throw ins near the flag which were launched long towards goal and it was fortunate that St. Margaretsbury were repeatedly penalised for minor infringements as the ball was fired into the danger area. But Borough were putting together some swift and penetrating runs of their own and after 79 minutes the power and persistence of Richard Worrell enabled him to battle his way along the bye-line almost up to the post and his clever chip past ‘keeper Alan Buck into the centre of the goal enabled Theo Charalambos to turn quickly to retrieve the ball after it had seemed to pass him to drive it home from just a few yards. St. Margaretsbury never really looked likely to make a comeback until a sensational strike out of the blue from some 40 yards by Paul Evitt in the 88th minute set up an unexpectedly nervy period of stoppage time which lasted for seven minutes. As was to be expected the home side now went all out for an equaliser leaving space at the back for Borough to exploit and a minute from the end of added time the ever industrious Worrell drove a clinching goal low into the far corner from a very tight angle indeed.
