Game NotesBorough were slow to get into their stride and paid the penalty as they found themselves three down inside twenty minutes. In the opening stages Hanwell were slicing through the Borough defence with worrying ease and it was no surprise that Town took the lead after seven minutes as prolific scorer Blaise O’Brien reacted first to flick home from a few yards out a hard low cross from the right in the seventh minute. In the 18th minute Borough ‘keeper Jamaine Edwards seemed sure to make a simple catch of a high through ball but allowed it to bounce of his chest and the lurking Grant Kemp knocked it into the empty net. Only a minute later Kemp scored again but this time he had a lot of work to do as he chased after a route one ball and shrugged off ineffectual defensive challenges to take it right up to Edwards before nicking it away from his dive to make space for a low shot into the centre of the goal. Either Hanwell eased off or Borough raised their game – the latter looked the more likely case – as for the rest of the half Borough played some of their best football of the season with speedy slick passing movements to keep the home defence on their toes. In midfield David Boal was instrumental in promoting many of the most promising threats and up front Daniel Ailey with his superb close control was a constant thorn in the side of the home defenders often being crowded out at the last moment as he fought to make himself an opening. Midfielder Rakim Richards sent one fierce long low drive inches the wrong side of the post and Jamie Brandon’s attempt to fire a low cross into the danger area from the bye-line only a few yards from goal was just deflected out for a corner. Both full backs Charles Douse and Demetri Stratis regularly raced down the wings to fire over crosses which no Borough player could quite reach before the hard pressed defenders. Douse who had stayed forward following a corner was unlucky when it was Hanwell ‘keeper Keiran Jimmy’s turn to spill a ball but at this end it did not fall kindly for the Borough man. However, Borough were right back in the game two minutes from the interval when in one sustained bout of Borough pressure, Stratis picked up a loose clearance midway in the opponents half on the left and fired a superb diagonal ball into the path of Miguel Martins racing down the right touchline who quickly brought it under control and slammed over a perfect centre which Ailey met with his head some ten yards out and rocketed it into the top corner. After the interval Borough continued to enjoy the lion’s share of possession. Ailey headed another cross just over and was surprised, as were many others, to be denied what seemed a fine second goal on the grounds that he had handled when bringing it under control although neither the home players nor the crowd appealed. Borough’s cause was helped twenty minutes into the half when Hanwell’s Joe Hatcher received a straight red card for what was perceived as a deliberate trip or kick at Ailey who had passed him although Hatcher was far from being the last defender. It was an unexpected blemish on what had been, and continued to be, a game sportingly played in which the need for other cards was completely absent. Borough continued to press forward and substitute Theo Charalambos was just blocked at the last moment as he raced in from the right. Despite their numerical disadvantage Hanwell were not entirely devoted to defence and increased their lead a few minutes after the dismissal when a free kick from the left was fired over towards the far post where Michael Buckley was well outnumbered by Borough defenders who failed to clear it and it appeared to loop up off his shoulder to drop gently under the bar at the other post. Worse was to follow after 75 minutes as Connor Duffy made a fine run down the right to send over a fierce low cross from the bye-line and Nick Nicou’s desperate attempt to knock it out for a corner at the near post only succeeded in diverting it upwards into the roof of his own net. Obviously Borough were not going to pull back a four goal deficit in the remaining time but they never stopped playing their attractive attacking football. It was rather a strange result to a game where the losers had exerted the greater pressure overall and the winners defence had more reason to feel satisfied with their afternoon’s work than their more advanced colleagues. Indeed for all their determined attacking Borough had never been allowed to fire any efforts at the home goal such as would test the mettle of Jimmy, apart from the near unstoppable header.
