Game NotesNot a great game but by no means a bore-draw either, with plenty of near misses by both sides. Borough enjoyed the better of the early exchanges and Daniel Ailey had the first clear cut chance as he raced onto a through ball for a one on one with home keeper Kevin Lane but having pushed the ball wide of Lane he was just crowded out of his attempt to turn it home by the chasing defender. As the half wore on Biggleswade seized the initiative and were always willing to try their luck from distance but mostly fired high and wide. Brian Sealey in the Borough goal was handling crosses and corners cleanly and confidently although he was scrambling to reach a close range downward header from a deep free kick as it just floated past his right hand post which was the closest the home side came to a first half success. Towards the end of the half Borough re-asserted themselves and enjoyed their best spell of the match being particularly unlucky when a 20 yard free kick from the right of the penalty area by Marvin Walker smacked the crossbar and rebounded to safety. Before the interval Tolu Popoola had also driven a ten yard shot against a post. Biggleswade started the second half in determined fashion and the Borough back four of Theo Charalambos, Nick Nicou, Andreas Loizou and Ronnie Bridges were kept at full stretch but always managed to get in effective tackles, blocks or interceptions at vital moments. Borough were now creating few chances of their own with their promising approach work too often spoiled by straying off-side or conceding niggly fouls high up the field. But Borough seemed to have a good shout for a penalty when Jamie Brandon was “clipped” as he raced in from the left to meet a cross a few yards outside the far post and although he got his shot in he had been thrown off balance and prevented from bringing the ball under control first. A welcome sight midway through the half was the introduction of Charles Douse after a lay off in excess of three months to take his customary right back role with Charalambos moving further forward. Douse quickly announced his return, fearlessly unleashing a thunderous challenge for a 50/50 ball - an identical tackle to that which had put him out of action earlier in the season. As the game wore on Biggleswade posed the greater threat with their pressure winning a succession of corners and some free kicks in dangerous positions. They should have scored from just a few yards out when an unmarked striker sent a first time rocket just over the bar when he had time for a more composed finish. Douse’s return almost ended in disaster when an attempted short back header eluded Sealey and bounced towards the open goal with Loizou just able to get a sliced clearance in ahead of the threatening strikers to send the ball inches over the bar. Sealey’s kicking had not been as positive as his handling and it seemed Borough would pay a heavy price two minutes from time as his kick fell very short enabling a striker to collect it and run through on goal but Bridges somehow managed to get in a desperate last moment block as he shot and the ball flew conveniently into Sealey’s arms.
