Game NotesBorough edged their way into the 3rd round of their County Cup at the expense of Cockfosters in an evenly balanced match which never looked like a contest between a team near the top of the Premier Division and one near the foot of Division One. Borough’s line up showed several changes from that which had demolished Hatfield Town a few days earlier but it would be incorrect to describe it as weakened for it included erstwhile regulars Theo Charalambos and David Boal returning from suspension and injury respectively. Borough’s registrations now include several ex-Cockfosters players and of those Rakim Richards, Nick Nicou, Jamie Brandon and Charlie Morgan were on the Borough team-sheet. For Cockfosters, ex-Borough player Gary Silvera was in their line up. Cockfosters have long been a thorn in Borough’s side in Cup matches having won the previous four encounters without even conceding a goal. And it was the visitors who started brightly and felt justified in a confident penalty appeal when Borough ‘keeper Jamaine Edwards raced from goal and collided with an opponent right on the very edge of the penalty box without collecting the ball cleanly although in the event the exact position was of no consequence as the referee awarded neither a free kick nor a penalty. Fortunately the Cockfosters player and Edwards were both able to continue after treatment. But it was Borough who took the lead after 12 minutes when Brandon sent over a well flighted corner from the left which dropped invitingly for the unmarked Constantinos Georgiou, lurking on the edge of the penalty area on the far side, and he arrowed an accurate half volley back across goal low into the far corner to score his first goal for the Club. For a while Borough looked the better side putting together some slick passing movements with Georgiou and Boal orchestrating matters from midfield but Cockfosters had their moments too and Borough survived another loud penalty appeal, this time for handball before gaining the insurance of a second goal in the 39th minute. This time it was Brandon who was in space to finish against his former club with a low cross shot into the same corner as the first goal and from a similar position. When Daniel Ailey netted with a clinical finish in the first minute of the second half it might have been game over but the off-side flag cut short the celebrations. Cockfosters asserted themselves strongly after that and had their shooting been more accurate might well have pulled the game round but their long range shots were mainly well off target. Edwards was forced into a sprawling save to push a close range ground shot around the post as Cockfosters wasted their best chance. But in the 88th minute Ben Andreos was allowed too much space to collect and control a short free kick rolled sideways into his path and move into a central position before driving a powerful swerving shot from into the middle of the net from some 25 yards out with Edwards unsighted. Borough survived a nervous few minutes as Cockfosters, with nothing to lose, naturally redoubled their efforts and threw caution to the winds but without being able to fashion any serious threat to the Borough goal. Victory has earned Borough a daunting trip to mid-table Ryman Premier Division side Cray Wanderers who groundshare at Bromley’s Conference level stadium.
