Game NotesBorough were denied the point their performance merited by a combination of their own poor finishing and two controversial decisions which both went against them. An even first half saw both sides confidently calling for a penalty but neither were given and both sides created a number of chances. Nick Christofi in the Borough goal vitally came out on top in two one-on-ones and at the other end Fabiano Durimel shot straight at the keeper when he had a similar opportunity. Both sides made but wasted a number of half chances and the only goal of the half was unfussily slotted into the corner by Dunstable’s Nathan Miller from some ten yards after 30 minutes. Borough were too easily caught off-side in the closing stages of the half and when Mario Georgiou did spring the trap and raced in from the right Durimel was in an off-side position and his participation in the move wasted the opportunity which Georgiou would have had if he had completed the move himself. After eight largely uneventful minutes of the second half Borough unexpectedly found themselves level through an own goal by Steve Howarth hit from some distance when no danger threatened. In the 76th minute a Dunstable defender handled the ball on the goal line and although Durimel smashed home the loose ball the whistle had already gone. There was considerable surprise that the offender was allowed to stay on the field before Mario Georgiou confidently arrowed the ball hard and low into the corner to the ‘keepers left. Buoyed by their fortunate reprieve Dunstable seized the initiative and when Andrew Julius was forced to retire injured the composure of the Borough defence was disrupted. A fine move down the left saw the ball cut back from the bye-line to give unmarked Jonathan Barnett an easy 81st minute close range equaliser. The same player scored the winner in the 86th minute but Borough were incensed that neither the referee nor his assistant saw a Borough defender fouled in the build up with play being allowed to continue for the ball to be sent in from the right bye-line on this occasion and duly converted. Protests, less than politely expressed, were inevitably in vain so before the game restarted Borough had been reduced to 10 men and picked up two yellows as well. Even so the game should have finished all square but deep into stoppage time Durimel managed to smash the ball at visiting custodian Paul Taylor from just a few yards out when unchallenged.
